Black or blue sultans

Nobody disputes mutations happen. Least of all me.

But honestly, "one feather at a time".. C'mon really. That's purely for the dramatic effect.

Also, mutations do happen. But they overall are rare. Outcrossing is FAR more likely- EVEN if the outcrossing was not done in the recent generations. It's possible that person got a true de novo mutation of a white bird.. who's not to say there was an outcross several generations back? Both are possible. By genotyping or if the white phenotype is different from some way from domestic whites(such as having pink eyes also- now that is extremely rare) it can be much more convincing these whites are true new mutations in those birds.

People say a lot of things.. both deliberately or in honest ignorance or excitement- the latter are not to blame at all.

Personally I also do not think there is anything wrong with outcrossing, AS long as the person is honest about it or does not make claims such as "the birds are purest of the purest! But in a new color!". My response would have been completely different towards someone who said they outcrossed Sultans to blue or black something and then worked on creating a sultan type with the new color.. (response would have been Cool! Wish you the best!).

You don't think he means that literally?

I'm sure it was a bit dramatic but we all know what he meant.

There really is nothing to argue about because we don't know what the guy did to make those colors. It is entirely possible he did it over years of breeding or maybe he did outcross.

The only way to know for sure is to talk to him. Anybody know this guy? He lives in Austin, Indiana.

Cara, they recognize black, blue, and white sultans in the ABA.
I agree with Kev about there having to have been a cross some where in it.
Without crossing, how do you think new colors are made? They probably have silkie or even d'uccle in them somewhere but only that breeder knows. I cant get my computer to load the pics so I cant see the birds, but alot of sultans have horrible type, many are just droopy and dont show well.

If they truly are pure Sultans (which I don't believe for a minute), then he should not be breeding from birds of such terrible type. That will do nothing for furthering his 'very rare' variety.

Here you go. The first three are black and the last is blue.

If he is selecting only for color then type might be less of a consideration.

When breeding, type should be selected for first, then color. Those birds are deffinatly a cross, I just can't think of what could be in them at this minute. If they only bred from pure sultans to get them and only selecting for color they did a bad job. The black hen looks like my polish x cochin cross. The 'black' rooster has way too much red. If it was bassiness it would only be a little in the hackle, maybe some in the saddle, but he has it in his wings and everything. The blue rooster is just as bad, and the blue hen looks like she has way too many points on her comb. I personally wouldn't buy them, it would take way to long to get rid of the red in them, it wouldnt be worth it.
