Black pullet and golden/white hen?

Why is it that if it is a pullet then it's a Sex-Link, but if it's a roo then it's a mutt?

Because it has the coloring of a Black Sex-Link pullet, but BSL males are barred and colored like your rooster. There is no purebred breed that has roos colored like that (except maybe an extremely rare breed that I've never heard of or seen pics of).

because BSL boys look barred instead of black and gold leakage

They are both pullets and both sex links. If they hatched in May then if they were cockerels, either one, they would have much larger combs. They both fit their respective Sex Link colorings. Look at the leakage coloring around the hackles of the black one, it is a pullet.

I agree, if they were hatched in May then they're both pullets. But Count Orloff says his Buff Orps were hatched in May, he didn't mention the black's age...

If the black one is six months or older I say pullet getting ready to lay. Three months or less, it's a roo for sure. Four to five months could go either way, but I'm leaning toward roo if it's this age. It has real shiny feathers on it's wings... Better pics would help, less blurry and showing all of it's tail.

I just went and re-checked out your old thread with the Buff Orp hens and BSL rooster, and in it you mentioned that your black chicken has white speckles on it's chest. If it does, then that means it's a mutt, not a BSL.

You may be able to tell if it's a roo. Pick it up and closely examine it's saddle feathers located right in front of the tail. Rounded=hen, long and pointed=rooster. You can use your BSL rooster and Buff Orp hens for comparison.
