Black Rangers? New To Me

Oh , don't forget when you butcher the Black Rangers the carcass will have lots of BLACK PIN FEATHERS !!!
 
Yeah I agree the size of the reds are better for meat. Do you still have any of either reds or blacks?
I have one red hen left. She escaped the hatchet both times we butchered (did the reds one time, and the blacks a couple of weeks later). I decided that with her will to live, I just didn't have the heart to do her in. So, we put her in with the rest of the flock. She looks like a Buff Orpington to me. She seems to be getting along fine - no leg problems or any other obvious health issues.

That's for sure! At least you know if you got them all or not... We didn't. We just peel the skin off and don't eat it. But if you want a nice looking carcass without obvious pinfeathers, you don't want these birds.
 
The red rangers will live a long life if you let them live. They will lay good too.
 
I'm looking at them as potential meat birds. It's important to me that any meat birds I raise get to live a good life before processing.
I've not had freedoms, but did 10 Pioneers (also referred to as Dixie Rainbows) last summer and was very pleased with them. Nice size, nice foraging, blending right in with the pack of layer chicks. I held over one pullet and she is my best layer right now.
