Hi there! New to BYC! I have a concern about my 16 week old chicken. I noticed her butt was dirty last week, so I took her in to give her an Epsom salt soak/bath.. upon closer inspection, I noticed her vent was VERY swollen and had a black scab on it(thought it was poo at first but does not come off after soaks/bleeds a little if irritated).. she also seems to be pooping quite a bit and straining as she does.. almost gasping or seeming constipated.. her poo has some blood in it, but I assume thats from the scab.. is this a prolapsed vent or just a bad case of vent gleet? Does she have a worm issue? I thought maybe the gasping was from worms but now im wondering if it's vent related.. any help is really appreciated, just want my girl feeling good again..

Your hen appears to be in the process of prolapsing. Some other chicken has noticed the red protrusion and pecked it. Thus the scab.

A vent prolapses when a chicken, of any age from one day to very old, strains to overcome an obstruction, constipation or an egg. The first thing you need to do is segregate her so no further injury occurs.

What is her laying history? Has she laid an egg yet? Is she crouching in submission when touched on the back? Have you felt the pelvic bones to determine how close to onset she is? If not, locate the knobs on each side of the vent and try fitting two fingers between them. If your fingers fit, she's ready to lay, and if she hasn't yet laid the first egg, it could be stuck.

Go check your hen for this possibility and read this. It will give you complete information on how to treat prolapse and injury. https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...ng-from-vent-prolapse-oh-my-what-to-do.76124/

If she isn't at point of lay, then she may be constipated. The treatment for that is a couple teaspoon of coconut oil given orally.

I would use a rubber glove and lubricate her vent inside with vaseline or oil. Feel inside for any dried poop or urates. She might have had a prolapse or been pecked, or is clogged up with hard droppings. You can offer some chilled coconut oil pieces for her to peck, and help her poop. Make sure that she is taking plenty of fluids.

I don't think she is ready to lay yet; she is very tiny and her vent really only seems
1 finger wide! I will try the coconut oil as suggested & do my research before treating for prolapse! She's so swollen and tiny I'm worried about accidentally hurting her further. Really appreciate the information & the link! Thank you!!

Is vaseline sufficient? I read somewhere to use prep h.. but if vaseline is just as good, that'd be ideal since I have some at home already.

It is unclear to me if she has had a prolapse or just has crusty crud inside her vent. So, I would lubricate it and if there is crust or solid poop inside the opening I would try to remove it, little by little. It doesn’t really matter what lubricant you use. Honey is good and healing, Triple Antibiotic Ointment is also okay, and coconut oil is good.
