Black Sex Link Personality

I got 5 black SL from Southern States going on 4 weeks ago . I'm very happy with them so far . They have very powerful looking legs and are already flying to the top of the temporary coop , I had to cover it with screens. Good thing I have them on the enclosed porch! Soon they will be going out to the coop with the others [RSL] ,who are two weeks older..Hope to get some pictures up as soon as I figure out how to do it.

I have a q about my first chicken. I got her 2-1/2 weeks ago as a rescue off Craigslist. She went broody so the original owner gave her eggs to hatch from a farmer friend. She hatched 4 RIR which are now 5-1/2 weeks old. He told me she lays an egg a day. She has not laid an egg yet and still is keeping her babies under her on the roost. How long until she lays again??? I just started adding layer supplement to the chick formula. I have added oyster/ crushed coral supplements too! Will she start laying again once the babies are fully feathered? Thoughts?

Your broody hen won't start to lay again until she quits mothering her chicks.
This depends on how strong her mothering instinct is.
I have an EE/Polish cross who I call my perma-broody.
She followed her 2 babies around clucking after them until they were at the point of lay themselves.
She would sit on the ledge in front of the nest box, fussing and clucking at them.
She's a worst case scenario ... on the other hand, some hens will abandon their brood within weeks and go back to laying.
None of my BSLs or RSLs have ever gone broody and they are 3 years old.
They lay eggs very regularly but have no desire to sit on them.

I have two BSL's, one is a little skittish, the other sleeps in my lap. In my opinion they're great!

Oh boy! We got itty bitty, black sex links yesterday and of the two, one thinks it is 100lb lol. He has bumrushed me several times. It is hilarious! The one without the yellow mark on it's face is the stinker. :)

You are going to love your Black Sex Links. We have two and they are like dogs, love to be held and are very curious. Both are the leaders of the pack and crawl all over my two kids. They have been like that since they were chicks. Enjoy yours !!

I love my BSLs more than any of my other hens.
Sadly sex link hens don't live very long, but they are such sweethearts that it makes up for it.
I got 3 BSLs and 3 RSLs almost three years ago (June 2nd) and I just buried my first one yesterday.
The other 5 are still doing well although their egg production has really slowed down.
RIP Lil' Crow ... you were a great hen.

I'm so proud of one of my BSL chicks. She was attacked at 1 week old by a hawk and survived!!! She is now 4 weeks and the gash from her neck to her tail is finally healed. She is itty bitty still compared to her two sisters but she is a trooper!! Despite her injury she has never failed to try and run me down when I come into the pen and she can run faster than any other chick. I noticed today that her feathers are finally turning brown on the ends & her comb is catching up with those of her sisters. I've named her Napoleana because she never, ever lets her size get in the way of total domination. ;)

Here she is. You can tell she is small for 4 weeks.
