Black Sex Link Personality

When I got my baby chicks they did the same thing, after a while it stoped.... now they are 9 weeks old... I think that this will die down after a while!!!! My flock consist of three chickens,a White Plymouth Rock, New Hampshire red, and of cores A Black Sex Link!!

I have 2 BSL's and they are the sweetest little girls.

The first, Ginger, is my sidekick. She tries to perch on my shoulder when I sit in the pen. The second, Sweety Pie, is my daughters shadow. She just wants to sit in her lamp or follow her every move. They are part of my first flock and are the early favorites.

Yeah I have two BSL's, the first one, Black Sparrow, is really nice but can be squawky, but she is also obedient (Weird I know). The second, Ivy, is the sweetest thing, I can hold her like a baby (so her belly is facing up) and she'll fall asleep! I think it just depends on the chicken you get, not the breed.

I'm going to say that the personality of BSL's and any bird may be influenced by breed but is also determined on the individual traits of the parent birds. Just saying that my two BSL's aren't the cuddly, sweet girls everyone else is talking about. In fact, we're trying to see who might be needing to take a trip to "freezer camp" if things don't improve.

Have had 2 BSL's and 1 RSL's for over a year. For me, the RSL is best layer, hands down. One of the BSL's has been doing a respectable laying job. The other is problematic. She is laying soft shelled and no shelled eggs every once in a while and has been doing so for the past year. Yes, she gets layer feed, oyster shell, crushed shell, plenty of greens, even the occasional calcium tablet. Lot's of protein, too. She's just not a good layer. Will not lay for 2-3 days - then puffs up and sits in a corner - then we'll find a soft-shelled egg in the run. I think her internal egg equipment is faulty and figure it will kill her before too long.

Both BSL's are skittish to a degree and aren't overly friendly. They will come up to us but don't want petting or any personal contact. They only approach for food. They're fairly bright girls, you can see the wheels in their heads turning, but one of them has a bit of a mean streak. We have six 11 wk. old chicks in a run next to the BSL's and one of them is charging the chicks, trying to peck them through the fence, and then chasing them up and down the run from the other side of the fence.

If we determine that the Lousy Layer is also the Big Meanie - it's freezer camp for her!

I have a BSL, her name is Onyxia. All my girls are about 10 weeks. She's always been the smallest of the group. She is however the leader. She's not bossy or mean but she is the most brave. I gave the girls a hornworm today, a HUGE one. The other 3 chickens stood around it and when it wiggled they jumped in fright. So Ony came running over and immediately started tossing it around to show the other's it wasn't something to be afraid of. She's always the one roosting as high as she can, adventuring, and finding trouble before the others. If I come in the coop and hold my hand out she's #1 in line to see what I have. None of my chickens are "cuddly" but none are mean to me or each other.

One of my three hand-raised BSLs (Lil' Crow) has passed away. She had just turned three years old.
I have seen this before with sex-link birds at about this age. It is sad that they don't live very long because they are so sweet
and tame, and having raised them from day-olds I think there is more attachment to them.
I started with 3 BSLs and 3 RSLS but the BSLS were the most sociable.

My condolences :(

Here is a pic of Onyxia, she's around 3 months now.

I think that tall Sex-link is a male. He/she is much taller than the others, but I could be wrong.

All male black sex links have a white spot on top of their heads when they hatch. Females have solid black heads. They are a cross between Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire Red roosters and Barred Rock hens. The male chicks grow up to look like Barred Rocks. My BSL pullets hatched 8/27 and came from Texas. I ordered 15 but I think 1 is a different breed since she is a redhead or maybe a color mutation. I really like them. They are very sweet, athletic, and they do not all look alike. Some have a lot of orange and some very little. They look like Halloween birds.
