I'm going to say that the personality of BSL's and any bird may be influenced by breed but is also determined on the individual traits of the parent birds. Just saying that my two BSL's aren't the cuddly, sweet girls everyone else is talking about. In fact, we're trying to see who might be needing to take a trip to "freezer camp" if things don't improve.
Have had 2 BSL's and 1 RSL's for over a year. For me, the RSL is best layer, hands down. One of the BSL's has been doing a respectable laying job. The other is problematic. She is laying soft shelled and no shelled eggs every once in a while and has been doing so for the past year. Yes, she gets layer feed, oyster shell, crushed shell, plenty of greens, even the occasional calcium tablet. Lot's of protein, too. She's just not a good layer. Will not lay for 2-3 days - then puffs up and sits in a corner - then we'll find a soft-shelled egg in the run. I think her internal egg equipment is faulty and figure it will kill her before too long.
Both BSL's are skittish to a degree and aren't overly friendly. They will come up to us but don't want petting or any personal contact. They only approach for food. They're fairly bright girls, you can see the wheels in their heads turning, but one of them has a bit of a mean streak. We have six 11 wk. old chicks in a run next to the BSL's and one of them is charging the chicks, trying to peck them through the fence, and then chasing them up and down the run from the other side of the fence.
If we determine that the Lousy Layer is also the Big Meanie - it's freezer camp for her!
