Black Sex Link Personality

I think temperament is variable. Ours were/are more aggressive than the Barred Rocks. However, one of the Black Stars is jokingly referred to as my husband's girl friend because she follows him around and likes to ride round on his wrist when he is walking around the yard. She'll come and sit at his feet and jump in his lap. Another was aggressive and domineering - but not as bad as the pullet who seemed to be a Black Marans and not a Black Star (the fact that she was about two pounds heavier than the others, was flighty, mercilessly attacked those below her on the social hierarchy, was noisy, had a long neck, and laid dark speckled eggs were our big clues.)

I would describe them as vinegary; however some of them are quite friendly. Some Red Stars are very unpleasant and an acquaintance gave up her entire flock because the behavior of the Red Stars and their aggression left her very shaken.

For peace in the coop, I suggest getting all one color of one breed or mixing colors completely, with no one color outnumbering the others, and either all of different colors, or at least two of any color. Chickens can be vicious; for this reason it is also good if you must mix breeds to try and get birds that have similar, less aggressive, and non-cannibalistic temperaments. Putting a Silkie, Polish, or Cornish Rock in with Leghorns is likely to result in a dead Silkie, Polish, or Cornish Rock.

Someone posted in reviews that she has Black sex links that are still laying at 9 years old. Ideal has a special on them. Only $1.80 each for pullets if you order 25 or more.
