Black sex link thread!!! Pics and info!

Yes, they are allowed. (now) I didn't even know that they existed.
I guess they both start with B and end with sex link. Lol

Well, it's the same basic principal. Start with a barred hen. At the hatcheries they put a Red rooster over them and wind up with black hens with red leakage. I swapped out the Red rooster for a splash Ameraucana and got blue hens that may develop some red leakage as they age--I just have to get one old enough to find out.

Interesting.

I have a question about black sex link chickens. I have a black New Jersey giant rooster and some barred rock hens. Will their offspring be black sex link chickens?

Nope, I don't believe so!(but I'm not 100% sure) Black sex links are a cross between a New Hampshire or Rhode Island Red rooster and a barred rock hen, this produces an all black pullet or a clack cockerel with white on his head. This has to do with the genes that the male and female birds carry because of the specific parent breed and gender!

Sarahboff,

Do you have black sex link hens? If so, how well do they lay? Will they lay better than say a full blooded RIR. Thanks.

I have two BSL pullets (Coleen and Joleen) that are almost 18 weeks old, so they haven't started laying yet! I am new to chickens this year and all my knowledge had come from friends and various websites and blogs, so I can't answer your question. Sorry!

This is my first time having chickens close to laying age (mine are 19.5 weeks old now). But I think they do lay more eggs then the RIR breed.
Their personality is awesome though! My girl is sooo sweet and friendly. Of course it also depends on how much time you spend with them.

Hey everyone! I have some exciting news! I got my first egg from my chickens today! I'm pretty sure it was my Black sex link (Black Star) Pepsi, but it could be my Brown sex link. They are 20 weeks and 2 days old now. I think my Black sex link is the one that laid it because she has the biggest and reddest comb of all of them and my Australorp has a small comb still. Isn't it a beauty?!

It's small, but I think it's a good size for a first egg.
