I really don't think it's a great indicator that they'll lay soon. I have great layers and they just don't squat. Bit mine also don't let anyone, even roos, dominate all over them
 
Do you know their breeds?


Two easter eggers(one squatted, one didnt) and three silver laced wyandottes( two squatted one didnt). I have two black sex link chicks now, only 4 weeks old though

That's my girl, she is high in the flock and is the boss of almost all the other chickens. she loves to boss all the other chickens around but is sweet to me [ not sweet enough to let me hold her though]. She is also always the first to go up to new things and the bravest.
 
Don't think breed matters, it's all about the individual bird.
When I was chicken sitting long ago a BSL squatted when I tried to 'pet' her.
She might have been 'lonely' as the cock was locked in another coop.
Mine rarely squat for me, but I always have a cock in the flock.
