The hen has to be the barred bird. It won't work if it is the rooster who is barred. You can cross any solid colored rooster with a Barred Rock hen and get Black Sex Links. The newly hatched male chicks will have a white spot on top of their heads, and the tops of the newly hatched female chicks' heads will be solid colored.
