Thank you for your answer it really helpedLooks like very minor scabs from pecking or could be fly marks.
Welcome to BYCHi all, I am new to having roosters. Interesting experience learning all their habits, rituals, language and aggressive interaction with the ladies. I currently have 2 roo's. One is nice, but the other has attacked me twice. Each time I caught and held him for minimum 20 minutes. It has not helped to tame him, but he thinks twice before coming at me. lol
My question is, both roosters combs and wattles are covered in black spots. This happened overnight, they both are a mess. I have had hens get this but it usually is a progressive thing, possible mites or something, fixed with vaseline. The boys occasionally jump at each other, but yesterday they were fighting rather intensely. Can I assume this is dried blood, since it happened so suddenly. Thank you in advance for your replies.
Hello,Welcome to BYC
Can you please post photos of your roosters and their combs?
If they are fighting, then most likely the spots you see are scabs and dried blood.
How old are these boys?
Sometimes you need to separate a cockerel/rooster from the flock to gain some peace within the flock. Boys can tend to fight.
How much space do you have and how many hens?
Holding a rooster is not going to change his mind about attacking you. Once they are in the habit, it can be hard to break if at all. Consider rehoming him. Thank you for the update and photos.Hello,
I have been so busy, I only now looked at my posts and replies. But, wanted let you know how much I appreciate your reply and link and you deserve an update. I did not take pictures. Really need to get in the habit, pictures are super helpful. I have included a few below for fun. Everyone loves seeing everyone else's chickens. I thought a reply could be helpful to others, since the 'big egg shortage', so many folks have begun raising chickens.
The boys were 5 months old at that time, they are better now. Maybe it was the initial "Who's boss" squabble. I am happy they didn't need separating. I had 3 hens at the time and bought these 2 together in July as BCM hens, then to my surprise and slight disappointment, they were brothers. Was looking forward to chocolate eggs. Not a good roo to hen combo. Oh well, I still love these guys.
As for the aggressive rooster, his name, briefly, "Ralph", change to "Mr. Man" when he got aggressive. He only challenges me now rather than attack. Thinking, it is because I catch and hold him every time he insists on 'playing bully'. Almost as though he likes it. Geesh!
I am keeping the other brother "Vinnie", as he is not aggressive, but not a cuddler either, just does his rooster thing, minimal crowing too (a good thing). He is great with the girls, protective, observant, finds goodies for hens, he always eats last, keeps everyone in line and even the new hen-chicks like him. He seems to be warming up to me, as he has been coming closer, or, is he just testing me out? lol
I have Mr. Man and 2 other roosters for sale, just re-homed a 4th roo.
Currently have 4 roo's and 7 hens, various ages (4 mo's to 1 year) and a broody hatch (? 2 roo, 2 hen and 1 ??) Always the jokes about 'Chicken math', it is no joke! I have had chickens (hens) for over 20 years. In the last 3 years, I have had more rooster's than I can handle. All from straight run purchase, incubation and now a broody hen. Hope to have a perfect roo to hen ratio, with 30x15 run and 1/2 acre free range. Yes! What chicken isn't spoiled!
Re-home these three

Thank you again for your reply. Frustratingly, some posts go unanswered.
Happy Chickening!
