@Folly's place @BantyChooks, others more than welcome.

The picture shows developing black around a cockerel's nostril. The flock has recently been through a bout of mites but this fellow was not heavily infested (if at all). All birds were treated with Permethrin spray and subsequently with sulphur powder; very careful to avoid spraying the head area; mites appear to be gone. Some of my other Chanteclers are also developing black spots as well.

Any suggestions as to what it may be and how I should respond would be appreciated.

Have you tried to remove the material with a wet QTip or tissue? Is there any nasal drainage or any material seen inside the beak? The eye appears a bit sunken which sometimes is seen in chickens with MG or respiratory disease. Have you seen any bubbles in eyes or heard any sneezing or crackly breathing?

Mary,

Their dust baths have stove ash, mostly sifted so very little charcoal. Other than that there is nothing black that I am aware of and I am intimate with everything in the coop and run given a recent mite session. Coop was emptied and sprayed, new pine shavings all recent.

The floor and 12" up on walls are BlackJack57 but that is 18 months old. I will do a search tomorrow for signs pf pecking on floors/walls.

It is possible but the Chants do not appear to be using the dust baths, do use depressions that they have dug in the run.

I will have a list of things to check tomorrow for sure.
