Help!! So one of my chickens just died.. it’s was a long slow wasting away while I feverishly searched the internet for causes and solutions.. I’m thinking maybe worms ... but today I noticed black spots on one of my healthy chickens combs.. I recall seeing black spots on the one that just passed. Does anyone have any idea what this could be if anything? I want to nip this early so I don’t lose another!!

Most likely fowl pox.. this happened to my flock. I separated the “spotted” hens and administered .1mg of Liquamycin into the breast muscle once a day for five days. The hens that didn’t have as many spots/as droopy of combs bounced back around day 3 of the shots.

all are cleared up and their combs look very healthy! Liquamycin can be found at your local feed store. It’s for cattle and swine but .1mg per 2.7kg or .2cc every pound

Pictures of the spots would be helpful. Pox is a virus and antibiotics won't treat it, it just has to run it's course. How old was the one that died? Without a necropsy it's just guessing, but with a long wasting then in birds over the age of two reproductive problems, like cancer, are not uncommon.

Definitely run through all illness checks as well but I will say that my free rangers get black dirt on their combs often and I think it’s an illness until it washes right off with water. It can look just like pox.
Just try to wash it off before administering drugs. Just in case.
