Hey guys. Hoping someone here can help me. This is our rooster, Goliath. This is a close up pic. He's a Dominique. We've only had him a few weeks. He has these black spots that look like scabs on his comb.

He was quarantined when I noticed them and it was at that time he was in a temp pen in our barn. He escaped from his pen when he found a weak area in the fencing cloth...no biggie...he was still contained in that section of the barn and we let him stay there during his quarantine. I'm wondering if he might have scraped his comb during his escape and this is now healing.

Some people online think it might be mites and some think frostbite. I'm a little concerned. I'm going to check him out thoroughly this evening. Otherwise he seems 100% fine and happy (other than some frostbite on his wattle). Thank you for any insight!!!!

It looks to me like dried blood from pecking or insect bites. Fowl pox might be a possibility if you have mosquitoes out, but it seems too cold for that. I'm not sure how he could have been pecked if he is alone.

Did you ever figure out what these black spots are? My roo has similar markings. It's summer 80 degrees so def not frostbite. Mosquitos are out unfortunately pretty thick in Maine where we are.
Thanks

They could be pecks or cause by rubbing their combs on stuff.

This is a rose comb he has. The little black dots can be from pecking from other birds in the flock or rubbing.

I don't believe this is fowl pox.

This is fowl pox. Yes misquoted are a carrier.

Did your boy eventually heal? He's an Ameraucana so on pea comb.
This thread is from 2016, so I would be a good idea to post photos of your own bird so we can see what's going on.
The photo from 2016 that the OP posted-I agree, it looks like fly marks and/or scabs from pecking or rubbing against fencing, etc. as suggested in Post#2.

I agree with your chick and pox. That looks to me exactly like fowl pox in a young bird. The virus lasts about a month, and in baby chicks, those scabs can cover the eyes or nostrils, making it hard to see their food and water, or to breathe. Texas and other southern warm states have some of the worst pox problems. There is a fowl pox vaccine for chickens who have never been exposed. In the first picture of this thread, it does look like pecks or injuries.
