Black Star Sex-linked pullet from Hatchery looks like Roo

No, I do not think it is possible to have a barred black sex-link pullet because COLOR is SEX-LINKED meaning, COLOR is determined by SEX, the a pullet is going to to be one color (black w/ red, in this case) and the rooster is gonna be another (barred, in this case). I do not think it is possible any other way, else this couldn't be a SEX-LINKED breed could it?

Well- actually, I suppose a barred black star pullet can happen theorectically in the event where during the meosis prophase, there is genetic exchange (at synapsis) or a mutation that result in a different color allele. That means at the X chromosome, presume black color is dominant gene. Is the barred rock color trait autosomal recessive?

I just thought of another genetic reason - lyonization of the X chromosome... and a somatic mutation....

Anyway - much ado about nothing. I shall have to wait to see if she lays eggs. My Honey tells me that I will have to rename Parvati (if she's a he), so that I can to cook 'it.' Yep- I'll name it Voldemort if he crows!

I just wanted to know if a barred black star pullet ever existed, to satisfy my own curiosity.

It's a black star roo- without a doubt. Females would never be barred. The yellow legs are also a giveaway. He'll be pretty-and yes they do look almost identical to barred rocks, but they're not. It was a hatchery mistake- but kinda strange because they are so easy to spot on day 1.

chickens don´t have the X or Y sex chromosomes..males are homogametic (ZZ)-..and females are heterogametic (ZW). the Z chromosome is larger and has more genes, like the X chromosome in the XY system...

NOPE...barred rocks carry the sex link dominant barred gen B. pure breed barred rock males are homozygous B/B and pure breed barred rock hens are hemizygous B/-

Well - thank you Nicalandia! Chicken genetics 101! Is there a book out there on chicken genes and traits?

I was perusing the ideal poultry website when I came upon a production black pullet that is barred!

See:

https://secuservices.com/ideal/newideal/selectproduct.aspx?qty=1&ID=PBP&Product=413

So that's different. There is truly a production black pullet that is barred. That hybrid cross is probably different from the typical black star.

Having had said that, my suspicious black star barred pullet (topic of this discussion) is probably a roo. I will update if otherwise.

Laters

PS BTW the online book by Dr Crawford is very interesting. Thanx Nicalandia.

yes ISSOLA you are right...

! I didn´t now about them, they are like the autosexing legbar breed from europe.. they are different from production black because they breed true and are autosexable and production blacks are a hybrid....
