This morning when we went to get our girls out of the coop, one of our young Black Stars had a big scratch on her wing and was bleeding. She's 6 months old, and started laying a couple weeks ago. We have a Wyandotte who was the bottom of the pecking order until the two black star pullets came, and she tends to be very mean to the younger girls. We're not sure--did she scratch the younger one during the night?
Now the younger chicken is walking fine, has eaten a little (although not much) but is preening and preening her injured wing. I'm worried that she's going to further hurt herself, and I have to leave the house for most of the day today.
Should I crate her? Should I try to get a cone for her so she doesn't worry her injury? Should I wash the injury? Somebody mentioned bag balm on another thread--should I put some on the wound?
Help! I'm very attached to all my girls and want to do the right thing.
Thanks in advance.
