black stars

Just got a Black Star chick and like mentioned above, is under foot whenever I let her out of the brooder. She's very friendly and likes to sit on my shoulder. Has not pecked me or my 4 yr old daughter. So far a very sweet girl. Still need to name her...any ideas?

hello I named my black star hen starlite. but I had one of my hens die and I raised her sense she was a baby but the one that died was a salton and her name was butterball

. So how about butterball.

I have a black star hen that is 4 years old, lays every other day AND went broody last summer! I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it with my own eyes! She's definitely the matriarch of the coop (pushing and shoving her way to the feeder) but I feel like she's earned her place. I'm trying Americaunas (sp?) this spring but if they don't live up to their egg laying hype, I'm going to fill the coop with black star chicks next year!

my only black star hen died a few days ago. she was awesome but if I were u I would get more black stars. my nana got a Americana and she layed good but after a few days later she stoped. when she tried to start laying she would start bleeding. they aren't as good layers as black stars. and she got her before she ever started laying.

Hi, city girl turned country here.

This may sound silly but I know roosters are noisy but what about 3 to 4 chickens?
I was thinking about the Black Stars for egg layers did not know about the reds. No roosters allowed (sorry to say).
We are in Southern Oregon.

hens aren't loud at all but if u could get a rooster they r the best. they r sometimes loud when they crow but then they would stop. if u want chickens for laying u don't have to have a rooster. only get a rooster if u want chickens. I have two roosters and they r better then hens they aren't as messy.

Hello, I have two black stars that I got as day old chicks. They are friendly enough (one more than the other) but they don't like to be petted or held. Their feathers are extremely soft and have a beautiful beetle-green tint to them that I love. They're beautiful chickens but I wish they were a bit friendlier is all. How are yours doing?

My two black stars are beautiful. They're turning 17 weeks on Monday. They are very loud but that may be because they're mimicking my 21 week old EE's raptor screech. Even my silkie hens are screeching now. My black stars aren't mean to me but they aren't friendly either even though I've had then since they were two days old.

We have two black stars: Chocolate and Raspberry. They have been great brooders and mothers. One always disappears when she is brooding. This time she reappeared with only one chick and since she has been free we have not separated them from the flock and she has done a great job keeping little Scamper safe from the other chicken and three curious cats and an energetic husky/lab puppy. She, Chocolate, will come up and eat out of my hand gently; Scamper is getting there but he is only about 3 weeks and isn't sure about us. Our Red Sexlinks are rougher when they eat out of our hands. Raspberry, on the other hand, we let her with two of our Broody Reds (unusual) brood in the henhouse and we moved her with three chicks to a rabbit hutch we converted to a "chick house". We have not introduced them to the flock except that our flock is always hanging around the fence where she and her babies are. They are about 5-6 weeks old. We have a barred rock rooster and they have made beautiful chicks. I don't see where any of our Reds have produced chicks with stripes, our rooster, no Black Rocks yet.
