Blind duck, I think!!!

I had a blind cockerel. I kept a pan of feed and water in a place and he would find it. He would go out of the coop into the pen with the others and would find his way back to the coop pop door. He would peck around until he found the opening and go in. I was very worried in the beginning but he seemed to manage ok. I eventually gave him to a young boy that wanted him with his mom's permission.

Animals just like humans hone their other senses and can live pretty normal lives of course we have to protect them from predators just like those that can see but use more precautions with one with a handicap, I don’t think I’d let a blind duck or any other poultry run around outside with out supervision especially in the open since it couldn’t see a hawk or other flying predator swooping down on him.

He should have been culled but I missed it in the beginning. Once they grow out it's much harder. This is my latest, her name is Gladys and she is a cross beak. She is 2+ years old. She does get special feed.

Are you able to get her a game bird crumble (high protein?). You can encourage her to eat it by soaking the food in water. Make sure you dip her bill in it so she knows where it is. She should have food available at all times.

EDIT: She might still need chick starter until she's even older. 20+ weeks is what I was reading. It's been awhile since I had ducklings.

It sounds as if she isn't feeling well. Hopefully someone can help you. Poor duck. :(

I won't be able to get game bird grower till at least next week, so I will put her back on the chick crumb. She has been having vitamin supplements since she was young, as we thought she might have wry neck. It isn't she just has a deformed neck. All my poultry have access to food all day, but as she is blind she cannot find her food well, so I make sure that she is eating. I tend to wean ducklings of chick crumb around the 3/4 month age and never have had any problems, but maybe as she can't forage I need to keep her on it. She has eaten peas and a little bit of corn while I go and get some more chick crumb so fingers crossed. She also had a hot water bottle all night.

It sure wont hurt her to stay on chick crumb sound like she can use the calories. Do you keep her feed and water in the same area all the time? maybe whistle or call her name while at this place and get her to come. Then teach her that this is where her food will be all the time.

I did talk about culling her when she was younger. Was talked out of it, as she only had a slight bend in her neck and got on really well with the other ducklings. She still follows her two friends around the garden.

She must be doing great to be 2+ yrs old :thumbsup Why should your blind cockerel have been culled?
I usually cull for defects. I breed birds for show. Gladys would have been culled but I missed her and now I can't. Currently I have around 300 birds including chicks. Most often I sell birds to others who want to breed heritage pure breeds that I have or just for their flocks and eggs. I keep my best for breeding for the future of the breeds. When I got my first heritage pure birds, I promised the breeders I got them from that I would not cross lines. If I need new blood I will get birds from them, where I got my original birds from. I don't know why the mother of the young boy let him take my blind cockerel but I gave him to the boy. Maybe she wanted to teach him responsibility.

I do have to keep her beak trimmed. I would worry about someone caring for her. I have sold birds to people who don't properly care for their birds and predators would kill them and the people would come back to ask me to sell them more birds and eventually I said no because I was tired of letting my birds go just to be killed by a predator. I keep my birds safe.
