Blind rooster???

So you have two blind birds? Is there any injury you can see? If there is no injury then I would take a look at what they are eating and the environment to see if you can find the cause.

I finally got the rooster to eat today! And he's finally attempting to find food and his way around the coop. I dipped his beak in water and he would reach for the waterer again and again on his own. I tried to give him food but he can't seem to figure it out, even if I try to feed him from my hand. But he's been making attempts at finding food and pecking at the ground and spitting out the inedible stuff.

I made a mash of wet food and that worked! He stuck his beak in it and drank some of the water first, then he began to eat the food. I slowly lowered the dish until it was on the ground and he was able to find the dish by feeling around and continued to eat and eat!

Then he ran around the coop in circles running into things for a while until he found a corner to settle down in.

I'm still not sure what caused this. He's had that one bad eye since birth but the good eye looks normal, he just can't see out of it anymore? It could be genetic or something. He hatched from an egg from a really old hen and none of her eggs have hatched in the past. They usually develope to about day 18 and then quit. This one was sort of a miracle baby.

I had this issue. Roo went blind in one eye all of a sudden, a week later was completely paralyzed on one side for some reason. Had to cull.

My guy is doing okay! Its been an amazing experience working with him. I'm teaching him to eat and he's now eating dry food on his own and actually trying to find the feeder. He's able to find the water too and if he misses he keeps trying until he hits the mark.

The other chickens aren't picking on him too much. Occassionally it happens if the blind guy gets lost and starts freaking out, but if he's quiet they leave him alone. No one is obsessively picking on him to the point of hurting or killing him.

I'd like to make him his own little house to keep him out of the rain. Right now when it rains I set him right inside the coop door so he can stay dry, but still find his way out to the yard where the food and was is located. Plus, he knows his way around the yard and is less likely to get picked on out there. Inside the coop, he may get attacked or get lost.

He knows when I pick him up that it is feeding time. He immediately starts dipping his head and reaching for food. I'm glad I didn't dispatch him because this is such and amazing experience for me as well. He's gaining more and more independence each day and he's my new buddy!

Our house was hit by a catastrophic flood about a month ago. All of the animals were carried to higher ground, including the blind rooster. However, with all of the distractions of the flood clean up and mess, the blind guy didn't get as much one on one time as he needed.

I would take his food to him and get him eating on his own, and then I'd leave him, assuming he was able to continue to eat without me. I didn't have the time and/or energy to devote to him and he died. He may have starved, I don't know? I could have been complications from whatever caused him to go blind, but with all the stress of the flood damage and trying to get our lives back to normal, it was kind of a relief to not have to worry about the poor guy anymore. I feel bad though that I wasn't able to give him enough attention, but who knows, he may have died anyway.
