I have two silkie roosters. One of them lost an eye in a fight about 2 years ago and was fine but now his pops and he got into a fight and his remaining eye was hurt. He got around okay for a while and found food and such and was uncatchable. Yesterday I saw him sitting alone and thought he was dying but this morning he had moved so I caught him and his eye is covered with yellow gook. He wont eat, but I got him to drink water when I dribbled it on his beak area.

I hate seeing him suffer but I am not up to chopping his head off or shooting him. is there another humane way to kill him ( at no cost)? I am thinking abut just burying him but then I will have nightmares of zombie chicken attacks.... ( I do not have a garage or can think if a way to fume him with car exhaust either as it is pretty open out here by me, I dont think I even have a box to put him in... gesh poor guy.

If you can't kill him then mack him as comfortable as possible. I think I may know how you feel. Daddy did this to one of his sons I found him in the bushes and made him a comfy place in an outbuilding by himself and looked after him for two weeks before he died ( my vet looks at me as if I'm mad when I ask him to look at a chicken unless I get him on the farm. ) I do wish I had the courage to break his neck or something but I felt at the time I couldn't take his life. And I didn't know how to do it properly. Since then iv been shown how too.Thankfully iv not had to yet. I hope you finde away that's best for both of you. Please don't burry him alive. Anything but that.

Dont worry, I will not bury him alive. That is cruel. I just wish I could help the poor guy.

I'm just anewbe too so I'd make him comfy and wait for more posts. Sorry. I do feel for you. My gramps once told me "sometimes you need to be cruel to be cinde " I didn't know what he really ment till then.

Do not worry, I would never bury him alive; that would be cruel and the poor guy has suffered more than enough as it is.

I have heard of using the exhausts from your car or quad bike macke a box that is big enough for your animal attach an in let for the exhaust. If you don't plan on eating it I think he'll just fall asleep and die. If you do. Please look for more info first then it's what you feel comfortable with.

yeah, I was thinking about that but my car is a vintage VW with a brand new 1914 engine in it; the exhaust output has so much kick to it, it leaves hole in the dirt where-ever I park plus it is low to teh ground. trying to figure something like that out for it though. That way I can then just bury him in the box too. poor guy =(

I need to cull some Roos soon now it'll be my first cull. I know my roo won't tolerate any other Roos here he is just after threatening the 6 week old La Bresse boys and his other wife has 9 little chicks that will have boys amongst and I'm not tacking chances coz that wee boy has seen off the fox more than once killed too of his sons but still remains a gentleman to his wifes and friendly too me and the kids he's perfect. My first roo a mongrel

The dad silkie, he has a 6 inch talon on one lega nd hte little bugger sneaks up from behind as one is walking away and attacks. He has been given the boot more than once, punts better than a football and always lands feet first, shakes his head & crows as if to say "ok, you win this time, but I'll be back". little monster. he and the hens are like 10 years old...

I'm glad coq au vin is good too us he's got big spurs n a lot of attitude he won't let us touch him but will take food from us and give it to the girls his sons wer twice the size of him but he killed one and blinded the other in one day I think his old wife may have helped him. She was also one I looked after for about two weeks after an attack from a fox then died. she was one of my first .5 years old fought off the fox but died from the injury. That's astory and a half I wish I had a chicken vet for that. She was a strong big girl who was real smart . She flew in windows that wer left open if she felt a threat our house was no one sanctuary the roo doesn't think he needs us but he's friends with our German Shepard who can't get along with other dogs but loves chickens cavies rabbits etc all other animals seem to get on with him. Weird dog!
