If you can toss some straw on the floor then just put scratch in with it... they'll fluff the straw, be entertained and the straw will serve as insulation. I have read of folks here hanging a head of cabbage from the coop or run and the chickens enjoy that - mine don't seem to get the idea.

Not that I have to worry... since it was 83* today and the low is 62.

I had forgotten about the Chinooks! You can go outside during a Chinook in the dead of winter and the warm winds felt so refreshing - a tease to last us until spring.

I grew up in Northern Idaho, 60 miles south of Coeur d'Alene. We had wicked, wicked winters with snow drifts higher than the top of our school bus and piled almost to the eaves of the house. On December 30th, 1968, we had -65 degrees on the thermometer. I didn't venture outside until it warmed up to 40 below zero. Ah yes, the good ole' days.

Now I live in the balmy mediterranean climate where it's 19 degrees at 7:35pm.

Well, here in B"ham upper WA we had 65 mph gusts and sustained winds @ 45 mph With the degrees @ maybe 7* They said we were well into the MINUSES.
Tonight is a different story 11* and hardly any wind. Thank you God. I spent my day papering the girls with Bag Balm messages and warm water cocktails!!!

Hey, I'm up here in mild 'ol Forks, and what'd I get?

- Cracked open, frozen eggs in the COOP of all places.

- 4 Dead chicks due to piling up for warmth

- 10 hours without power - Overnight

- A whole incubator's wasted of eggs because of the power outage

- 3 inches of snow, but temps down to 23 degrees and winds up to 20 mph.

- All sources and containers of water completely frozen, including piping

- 2 hours spent to use a torch on our piping to thaw it out and have water again

I am interested in making some type of huddle box for my girls over their roost. (the coop is insulated, but it would just me me FEEL better!) Would it trap in the moisture though while they sleep? I have 11 hens who all huddle together on their roost at night.
