Hey guys, We just discovered one of our pecan ducks has blood around her vent, there was a bit of blood, but we ruled out a broken egg since we have 6 ducks and 6 eggs were laid today. I also had my finger poking around in there, and couldn’t feel any broken shell or a egg. I discovered a purple bit of skin that had prolapsed outside, I did push it back inside with a little polysporin hoping to catch any infection before it happens. We did not notice any cuts or scraps, I think she might’ve had a hard time laying a egg and partially prolapsed her vent, we have her in a warm bath as we speak but my main question is why was there a bit of blood and can we stop her from producing eggs in case it’s a prolapsed vent? Also she is pooping fine and don’t seem in distress as she turns my bathroom into a swimming pool

It is hard to know exactly what happened, but some chickens can partially prolapse when they lay an egg or strain to poop. Another hen may come along and see the red and peck at it. That might be the cause of the blood, but just a guess. You did right by pushing it back inside and putting some ointment on it. There is a lot of debate on what to put on the vent whether honey or sugar, or other ointments or creams. Honey can reduce the osmotic pressure and that reduces swelling. You can use mild coconut oil or olive oil, but just keep any prolapse that stays out, moist so it doesn’t dry out. Keeping her in the dark for 16 hours a day can eventually stop laying, but it may take 3 or more days to accomplish.
