When I went into the coop a bit ago, there was some blood in 2 places inside, and a small spot outside on a cement block in part of their run. It was not in poop, but on its own. I am including a photo, and I also saw some under the ladder style roost.

I have inspected every bird, including looking at their vents, and cannot find any wounds or signs of the origin. I did find a broken soft shelled egg, not far from where the blood was under the roost, and my white hen had some blood on her feathers near her neck, but I pulled apart her feathers all over her body and searched and could not find any wounds. The gold hens didn't look like they had any blood anywhere, and it is impossible to see if the BCM have blood on their feathers.

They are all acting pretty normal, but I know they do many times even when they are hurt. They all appear to be eating and drinking normally.

They eat layer pellets, some kitchen scraps and free choice granite and oyster shell. They used to be free range but there began to be too many predators. I do let them out to free range when I am outside.

Any ideas on what could be a hidden cause of bleeding? The only thing I can think of is if some other creature got into the coop and my rooster attacked it. But he has no blood on his feet and no signs anywhere else that I can see. I don't see any blood outside the coop other than the one small smeared spot on the cement block.

Any ideas on what possible hidden cause I could check for would be appreciated. I am mystified and alarmed at the same time.

I notice blood drops/smears every once in awhile around my coop/run, too. I think I’ve narrowed it down to a scratch on my rooster’s comb, but he won’t let me close enough to properly investigate, and it’s never turned into anything. Hopefully harmless for you, too!

I hope so too! My roo doesn't appear to have any issues with his comb. He is pretty gentle mannered and I am able to inspect him fairly easily.
