I came home to find my wyandotte chick dead yesterday and thought maybe had a heart attack... it was perfectly fine when i checked on it in the morning and all 5 others were fine too.. poop looks good, eating and drinking good... breeder said they have been vaccinated for mareks.. have no idea what could be wrong!
Not sure if food is medicated but it came from a specialty pet shop that sells all things for poultry so i thought for sure it would be,

Came home today to find second wyandotte chick laying down.. eyes closed.. still breathing... kicks and moves every little while and can still chirp! she looks to be in pain... not sure what to do! what could this be.. and do i ahve any chance of saving her?!?!

check the bag > ingredients should be listed and if medicated chick starter should be on there (please post what the brand of feed is and any other info on bag) ... look for a agricultural feed store if your store does not carry the medicated feed.
Cocci is very common and if the feed is not medicated this may be what is wrong.
How old are your chicks and were they vaccinated for anything (and if so for what?) Where is the source of your chicks (private or a hatchery?)

rang city farmers where i bought the feed and they say it is medicated... so im very confused.
chick is now trying to chirp but no sound coming out!

need to know the age and how you are housing them (in brooder?) do they have access to the ground/out of doors?

they are in a box with heat lamp... i am very careful about keeping it clean. they are only 2 1/2 weeks old. havent been outside yet

could it be salt poisoning? i heard that if the water contains too much salt that they will die...

need to check the temperature... make sure it is not too hot (that will kill them quick too)
Are you on well water ? If you are doubting the quality of your water then you can take a sample in to a pond shop or such and they can test it for you.

If it is the heat.. does the one that is still alive but not responding normally have a chance? its heartbreaking holding her and not sure what i can do.

Are you able to tell me what should be listed in ingredients to say that it is medicated..
Its just that they sell bulk at this farming shop and it doesnt have ingredients on the actual package.. but i rang and they said it was medicated. I am doubtful though and want to ring back and quiz the guy on what ingredients are in the feed.

ask him if this is chick starter (he may have sold you another type of medicated mash) > Ask him the brand name of the bulk they use. If he hmms and haws around dont trust it and get a new bag of feed (commercial brand) pronto.
there must be SOME indication on the package?
Sometimes the storage and other issues at feed stores that sell from bulk are not the best... personally I would not buy this type of feed (unless it had such a good reputation that I was sure that enough was being sold continuously that being "old'" was not an issue > call mid but when you get a commercial package then that offers a bit more security on such issues) Find another package of feed. Is there a lot of "fines" in it (so real powdery)?
