Blood in poop?

This is my first time raising baby chicks. We got 6 of them a little over 2 weeks ago from Theisens, which in turn get them from Hoover's Hatchery. They have all been growing and doing good. Then suddenly yesterday 1 was dead. I had checked on them all less than an hour before and they were all moving around and acting fine. This morning I saw some poop on top of the heat lamp that looks suspicious, so thought I would ask here for help. FYI, I do have them on medicated feed. The poop looks like it has a red gelatinous substance in it. Wasn't sure if it was blood?

I am pretty new to raising chickens, but from what I understand blood in the droppings is caused by a parasite ... coccidia I believe. Are you feeding a medicated starter feed?

Edited to add: I just seen the blurb at the end that said you had them on medicated feed. Hopefully someone will have more info for you.

Thanks for your reply. I am just not sure if it actually is blood, or an intestinal lining shed that I have also read about. Didn't know if it would hurt to treat them for cocci if perhaps they don't have it?

I don't believe it hurts to treat them if they don't have it.

I lost my favorite chick and I still kick my self for not just treating as soon as I saw her lethargic

I had another chick being lethargic and chirpy about a week later- I ran a 5 day treatment of Corid and all are good and happy and healthy at 5 weeks now :)
