Ok, stupid question.. how bad does it hurt them to lay an egg really? And are they secretive about laying, or is it commonplace to witness a girl lay one? Do they sound like they're in pain?

If they're in pain, I sure hope I don't come back to life reincarnated as a hen!

well, Im not sure about the chickens point of view, but honestly, if I open the coop while someone is sitting in there, it feels very awkward. Enough for me to say, 'oh excuse me' and close the door quickly. It feels like walking in on somebody in the dressing room, or going to the bathroom or something. They're just sitting there looking at you so matter of factly like 'yes? can I help you?' in their chicken voice (that would be the old matronly woman voice).
