I had a customer today come in and tell me one of my eggs he opened had a blood red yolk. Unfortunately he didn't get a picture. He swears it wasn't a blood spot, that the yolk looked like it was full of blood. I asked if it had a smell and he didn't recall one. I wish he got a picture. Has anyone else heard of such a thing? Is it something to worry about and what would cause it. They are free range so I couldn't even figure out which one layed it. Very strange....

I have read that if there is a little tear in the blood vessel at the time of the egg forming this can happen. The commercial folks candle their eggs to prevent blood spots from being sold - there is no harm in ingesting blood spots but obviously a large one like that would be discarded.

here's an explanation

It sounds to me that this was just a very LARGE blood spot.
