talk about an all day mission. it didnt want to stand so i made it a donut from a wash cloth so it is upright with its feet touching the bottom. this was the hardest assisted hatch i have ever done and i hope i dont have to do it again. thanks to all of you for the help. I got tons of good info and some reassurance too !! it is so tiny it would be able to walk under the 2 week old silkie the body is the size of those large grapes.

I have been thinking about your problem with malpositioned chicks. I had this thought that incubating is meant to be replicating what happens in nature and the work a broody hen does. With you putting the eggs straight into the incubator after they have been laid would you think that the eggs have not settled enough after being laid? I don't know about this theory I may start a thread and see what other members think.

I'm thinking this because when a hen starts to make a clutch for herself to start incubating she lays over let's say a week to build them up untill she has enough. With this the eggs are more settled in the nest and have had time to rest before she begins incubation.

I may just be grasping at straws here I don't know. I'm also thinking this as the last eggs I incubated I collected from the breeder in the afternoon and set them in the evening. When I got there she added one more egg that had just been laid it was still warm, i set it with the others but it was my only quitter at approx day10. I know one egg cannot be a guarantee of this theory that just laid don't make good for incubating it would need to be done with many eggs. Just a thought :idunno

That is a very interesting theory. I too would like to see others' thoughts about this.

well, guess we have an experiment going on then . i have had 11 deaths , three malpositioned the others no way to tell early quitters. I have 2 eggs in there now that went strait in and 3 maybe 4 eggs that have been in storage. I need some help PLEASE , the baby is in the brooder and seems to be fine. It cant reach the water !!!! I bought the quail water base so it couldnt drown but no chance of that if it cant drink.

Is it up and walking around yet? For the first day or two I usually put a small saucer or shallow dipping dish in with water so the babies can get it easily. They seem to like to walk into it and stand in the middle of the water to drink.

But, they can drink easily and I know they are getting enough. Once I know they are fine with the regular waterer I remove the small dish.
