thank you both for some great info. I have 3 eggs in storage last one being todays. I think i will collect one more and try 4 at a time. that will be 8 days for the first one. I will have the egg out of the bator in 2 mores day if it will be a live chick or not remains to be seen.

Of course there are a thousand factors that contribute to hatchability. Overall if the majority of factors are even, and you are strictly talking age of egg -probability (according to experts) have shown to decrease with age of egg.

Oh, I agree. I just thought it was interesting that I haven't had more losses yet, from my older eggs. Like you said - thousands of variables can impact it. Another thing to consider with the age of eggs, is for shipping. It seems that the older the egg (and thus the larger the air cell), the more likely it is to suffer internal damage in shipping and be unable to hatch (or even start growing). So it makes me wonder if maybe older eggs (up to a point) might be more affected by minor things that don't bother fresher eggs (such as temp and humidity varations, etc.), and that might account for some of the losses.

thanks . me too ! their "buddy" bird is probably to big for it now. LOL and they are still in the cage meant for the serama. they are so funny to watch though.

It's a logical conclusion. Someone needs to test it....lol (Hey it's a good excuse to incubate.)

I see a little black beak this morning but there is blood (dried) around the pip. it is also at the small end on the side. first heavy snow, 4 1/2 in. so far and electric is flickering.

The blood could be where it has pipped through a vein when making its hole. You may have to assist if it's wrong end. Hope it makes it

LOL, what nerves ? they are gone. it started the pip last night so i am thinking of trying to help but i dont know the right time. its little beak keeps going in and out of the same hole but there is a crack in the egg

I would wait at least 12 hours before starting to assist have you read the assisted hatching by Sally sunshine? I can't remember if I added it earlier in this thread?
My heads a shed today I'm having serious nerves myself BIRD FLU has been confirmed In my area and I'm bricking it for my flock I don't want to lose them. I'm in quarantine from any body else who is chicken/duck inclined.

yes, i have read it. a couple times. LOL its trying to zip i guess but its in a circle. I wet the membrane and seen blood vessels so i wrapped it in a wet paper towel and returned it to the bator. I will check again tonight. Bird flu? thats what the wild birds are dying from? I wouldnt of thought about the chickens having that. do you have a confirmed case or its just in the hood?
