It was suggested I repost this here...

I got 8 new chicks from the feed store. Probalby not smart but I couldnt' resist. The guy said they are 3 weeks old but a couple of them are TINY and none of them look bigger than our last batch which were all between a day and a week old. Anyways, a few of them now have bloody beaks like part of it is missing and one of the tiny one has some kind of messed up vent. It kind of looks inside out and there is some clearish fluid. What is wrong?? I can't think of anything that happened to them although I've seen them peck each other a bit. What do I need to do?

The chick died but I would still love any thoughts so I can take care of it if it comes up again. The vent was seeping a clear fluid. It didn't seem plugged.

Sorry it died. I'm thinking it did look prolapsed and I'm not sure, but that may lead to inability to eliminate which could kill it, or it may simply have dehydrated or weakened from leaking so long (who knows how long it was like this at the feed store before you came along). Even if you had been able to push it gently back in, it could have continued to be a problem in future.

If you do a search for prolapse or prolapsed you should find other threads that address it mostly in older birds and related to egg laying complications. Not sure why such a young bird had this problem. Could have been genetic. Maybe it's possible it had a bad case of pasty butt and someone was too rough pulling stuff off without softening it up first??? I'm only guessing.

I hope your other little rescue chicks are doing well.
