I cracked one of our eggs and the entire egg white was bloody. It was ALOT of blood. Is this normal? I obviously threw it out but wasn't sure if anyone else had encountered this. Thank you!
I had this happen a few years ago, totally bloody whites. My chickens were new layers & I got a few & then they were gone. Don't know why & it never happened again after it stopped. YMMV
Before a yolk is released to start the process of becoming an egg it is enclosed in a membrane. That membrane is filled with blood vessels, carrying nutrition to that yolk so it can grow big enough to become an egg yolk. When that membrane splits to release the yolk it's supposed to split on a line that has no blood vessels. It works that way most of the time. But occasionally a blood vessel grows across that neutral area and spills blood, which becomes blood spot. You don't see that in the commercial eggs you buy because they electrically candle them to remove any eggs like that before they go to the consumer. We don't candle our eggs so we can sometimes see some really weird things, weirder than blood spots. Some people have found an entire egg, including shell, inside an egg shell. It can be an adventure.
The egg making process in her internal egg making factory is pretty complicated. In some ways it's surprising how many get it right so often. But every now and then they can have an oops. I think we are all entitled to an occasional oops. Some hens are more prone to blood spots than others, especially when they are first starting to lay or are pretty old layers. Many grow out of it, though with some it's just an oops.
