Hello! I know I have been posting a lot, but I'm young so I'm wanting to learn some life lessons. Today, we went to a local farmers market in Central Kentucky. We picked up 9 chickens, 8 silkies and 1 cream legbar. None are vaccinated, and we only feed organic crumbles (because my original 13 chicks are vaccinated). I have a silkie chick (3 days old) that happens to have a little blood in its stool. When I looked this up, it all leads to coccidiosis (or however you spell it). I'm wondering if there are any other causes before I start to try to prevent the other nonvaccinated chicks from getting ill (all the silkies are different ages). I was planning on seeing how the chick is doing in the morning, and if it's still bad taking the over 8 chicks and putting them with my 13, separating the blood pooper. If the chick dies, I plan on moving the silkies back to the other brooder and giving some ACV, if it gets better, I'll probably do the same.... it's just weird because I just got these 9 this morning! It's not a lot of blood, but a little bit. The first poop I saw it do was runny, just blood. The second poop had the white cap and normal brown with a little bit of blood. I'm wondering if it just got injured or if it's actually sick! Let me know...

I suggest you get Medicated Starter feed,,, and that may be the best option.

What vaccination did your original chicks have been given? There are more than one vaccine given to chickens. That is why I'm asking.

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and :welcome

I got my 13 chicks from Murray McMurray Hatchery, they got the vaccine for coccidiosis and Marek's

I am not sure how long the coccidiosis vaccine is active for. That is one reason many peeps use Medicated feed for their first starter feed. When that bag is eaten,,, chickens build up their natural immunity, and medicated feed is no longer given.
The bloody stool is usually due to coccidiosis. If not treated,, there is a chance chick wont make it.:(
Corid is used to treat that. I have no experience with it though. Not sure dose amount, and also if OK to use on small chicks.:idunno
I have used the Medicated starter feed. :frow

Well should I switch everyone over to medicated? It'll null the vaccine....but may save the others

The 3 days old chick isn't old enough for coccidiosis. It could be intestinal shedding.
Mareks is, a leaky vaccine meaning that it will protect your chickens that are vaccinated so that if/when they come across the virus, it won't affect them as bad. But, it will attack the non-vaccinated with a higher mortality rate. You can always vaccinate your other birds, but sooner is better for better protection. It's best to have it fine within one day of hatch for the most protection.
The medicated feed is only good for chicks - after that you mainly treat with Corid, but not both at the same time.
You could treat all with Corid since you brought home new chicks and chickens to cover your bases.
Once that is complete, dig some soil up from your property. Dry it out and let the new birds have at it. It will help to build their immune system. Coccidiosis is local to your area.
