I live on Vancouver Island in BC.mm It rains here all winter, dark and dismal. My 3 hens are 1.5 ys old, Bovian Brown (commercial birds) and I have 3 Columbia Rock that 9 months. Being younger probably helps and the breeds to keep laying. I suspect next winter the older hens won't do as well. I would go with incandescent lights, I have heard they are not good for the barn animals. If you will use a light, definitely use the old style light, at least a 60 watt, 12 to 14 hrs.
