Last night when I checked the coop I found a ratsnake coiled around my 2 months old Orpington :( The check was dead and her buddy a 2 months old Brahma was very distressed.
I took the Brahma out and had hubby get rid of the large ratsnake. (We had previously lost two other checks same age to unexplained causes -now I know! I had no idea rat snakes constricted their prey)

So my little Brahma looks okay today but she has blood in her stool. Could she have been bitten or squeezed too? Or is this a reaction to the stress of last night?
Is there anything I can do for her. I can't bear to lose another one of our sweet chickens. These were so tame and friendly.
Please help with suggestions

(obviously coop has been reinforced with 1/4" hardwire cloth -looking for emergency chicken treatment suggestions)

At 2 months old, I would treat for coccidiosis with Corrid or Sulfadimethoxine. That would be the common ailment. Unless you can see an injury.

just to clarify: no bloody stool or anything yesterday before the ratsnake attack. Today only bloody poop. How would I see if she got squeeze by the snake? It seems like this sort of thing would not really leave any marks. Heck even the dead chickens looked flawless! :(

It would be safer to start Corid for the bloody stools, than to not, and lose several to coccidiosis. You can stop the Corid later, or give them the 5 day treatment--it won't hurt them.

One more question:
Is that stuff different from what's in the medicated Chick starter?
After we lost that first chick to unexplained causes I started feeding the MannaPro CHick Starter and it has this:
Medicated Chick Starter

Manna Pro Chick Starter is formulated for the development of active immunity to Coccidiosis and for increased rate of weight gain and improved feed efficiency in replacement chickens.
  • Medicated (with Amprolium) complete crumble for chicks for 0 to 8 weeks
  • 18% Protein for weight gain and muscle development
  • Fortified with vitamins and minerals for healthy growth and sound development

So they have been on that stuff already

When there is an active outbreak of coccidiosis, the amount of amprollium in medicated chick starter is not enough to treat it. Corid is what is needed. You may want to Google coccidiosis in chickens tonight snd read a couple of links--The ChickenChick has a good one, and BYC has many.
