BLRW prices?

Quote:
I've seen where they're asking even more than $5 per egg. I've been collecting these expensive eggs and have come to the conclusion that they end up more expensive than most of the dark marans eggs. Because it's a newer breed, they have lots of flaws and the cull rate is very high. I've hatched out a couple groups and have culled around 80% of them. They came from stock that looked very good. However, the traits are not "fixed" and you really can't do much with a small number of birds if you want some of the better examples of the breed.

Yeah it has just not been worth it for me,I would rather buy chicks or older birds.

Five dollars is a low considering the price they have been bringing. You will not find cheaper and can pay a great deal more. Buy'em.

I think $5.00 is a good price for them. I sold some about two weeks ago for $5.50 each.

Wow....my first time on this forum and I'm being talked about. I know my ears were itching.

I'm the one in southern MN with the BLR wyndotte chicks for sale. After this last week's hatch I now have 25 of them from 1 day to 3 weeks old.

This variety of the breed is a work in progress. Our family raises and SHOWS so I am familiar with the faults and forthcomings so far. I had a handfull of them last year at a local fair with a very respected judge there. They were at the 100th annual BCPPA Fall Classic. They were also exhibited at the MN State Poultry show. All of ours are either the medium or splash variation. I had alot of positive comments on the type and lacing on the feathers. Leg color and combs were excellent. The only complaint was that the tail structure wasn't as far along as the other varieties. Lots of pics on here: http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d196/destiny_56085/BLR Wyndottes/ Excuse the pics... Most of the birds are just coming out of the breeding pens for the year and are out of condition.

Sorry that you couldn't make the trip Sparkles. Just remember ...I do ship birds.

Sorry I don't haggle on prices either. I know what my birds are worth and price them accordingly.

Oh btw..... just to introduce myself.... My name is Amy Piehl. I live in Sleepy Eye MN. I am the new secretary for the BCPPA and the MN state rep for the American Silkie Bantam Club and the National Silkie Breeders Organization. I'm also involved with the MN State Pigeon and Poultry Organizations too. My family owned a local feedstore and we did the supply booths at all the major shows and swaps up here for the longest time. I went to college for 5 years to be a large animal vet. After one of my internships, I quit school to start my own hobby farm and never did finish out my DVM. The farm currently has 4 horses, 2 donkeys, 2 goats, and too many birds to mention. The silkies are my main breed, but we also have small numbers of the BLR wyndottes and standard cochins. Tons of waterfowl. We took over alot of Brian Schulte's geese when he retired. A few ducks... mandarins, rouens, and soon muscovies. 4 varieties pheasants, about 20 heritage breed turkeys, lots of guineas, and about 30 peafowl. Lots of fancy breed pigeons...modenas, pouters, ASR's, jacobins and komorner tumblers. Oh yeah and 2 Amazon parrots that never shut up.

Well BYC is a great place to get information. I am sure you know people question prices all of the time, because everyone prices their chickens to what they think they are worth. Which is not the same for everyone.

I think your chickens are very pretty. I hope you enjoy the BYC.

The worth is also determined by the market. For example, I used to raise tons of the bantam and standard light brown leghorns. Flighty dang birds that I wasn't real fond of. You were lucky to get $2.50 for the full grown cockerels and maybe $5 for the pullets. I happened to stumble on a lady on one of my horse forums that was looking for a specific bird though. Turns out she owned an animal ad agency out of WI and needed roosters for on her ads. I was offered $250 (yes without the decimal points) for each rooster I could come up with. Just happened to be a good time to sell out of that breed.

All those lil buggers went on to star in the Perkins, Kohls, and Gold N Plump commercials.

The rarity of the breed or deviations sometimes drum up huge demand. Mille fleue cochins, lavendar silkies, coronation sussex....... The list goes on and on. I can specifically remember a lavendar silkie pullet on Eggbid last year that brought $1800. Look at what those sussex are currently bringing on Eggbid right now. Standard BLR wyndottes were going for $250 a pair plus shipping on Eggbid last year. I'm sure the trend will fade as they get into more hands in time.

We also can get into the breeder to show quality versus hatchery quality. Birds that are bred to conform to the standard of perfection should bring more. There's a reason I get $5-25 for my pet quality silkies and up to $250 for the ones with proven show records. There's a huge difference in quality. I've lost track of the number of people that complained about silkie prices especially. I gave them the brochures for a couple of the large hatcheries. They bought from there and came crying back to me that those didn't look anything like mine.
My 2 cents,
Amy

I bid $15.00+ each on some chicks a week or so ago on eggbid, and still was outbid.
