Blu-Kote Warning

Pics
I would not use Blu-Kote for punctures nor burns. However, like all off label products that we use on our chickens including Blu-Kote, common sense regarding proper usages/dosages should take precedence. I use Blu-Kote for minor scrapes, scratches and small cuts as well as for hiding blood so that the injured chicken wont get picked/pecked on for said injuries by the others.
Most likely why you dont use Blu-Kote on punctures and burns is because of the isopropyl alcohol which would cause stinging/burning. But it's main purpose is used as a quick drying agent in the product.
What should I put on my quail? Been like this a few days, I’m looking for something to help her heal. She appears to be missing half a butt. (Still seems able to poo, is drinking and eating a small amount). missing half her butt side vs normal side.

The only thing I don't like about blu-cote is that it's so messy that it makes it difficult to see how the wound is healing if it's a bad one. All you see is the stain of blue and it doesn't do that much to help with healing. But if your goal is to cover up the redness, it will definately do that.
OK. What is a good antibiotic? Do you recommend one?

Since this thread has popped up again, I will again mention that Blue-Kote was recalled in Canada for risk of cancer. It had drying and antiseptic properties, which you can achieve in many other wound medications, and also if you need to create a non-pick coating for your chickens to disguise an injury, I recommend honey or a white/yellow ointment mixed with blue food dye. I believe Gentian Violet products are still available in the USA.

edit: read that 1% betadine can be used on small birds, and to avoid creams because the oil messes with their feathers.

I'll never put it on an injured chicken.

Neosporin or any triple antibiotic ointment is good, as long as you get the one marked Original which does not contain pain reliever. The pain reliever is said to be toxic to chickens. Veterycin is also good, we used them together, coating the wound with Neosporin then spraying with Veterycin gel to seal, coat and keep the area moist. A serious wound healed for us in about three weeks when we treated this way twice a day. We also flushed the wound thoroughly with a spray of sterile saline before treating as described. One of our hens had been grabbed by a dog.

I have used BluKote many times, and have always had good luck with it. Nustock cream from feed stores is very good to use as well--it is nontoxic, tastes bad when pecked, hides wounds, and is healing.
@Eggcessive do you do any sort of withdrawal time for eggs afterwards? I sprayed a teeny amount on the back of one of my hens who had a minor surface scrape, and the Blu Kote healed it right up. She even has new feathers growing in. Now I am reading about Gentian Violet and freaking out that I was still eating her eggs. I mean I'd be surprised if the tiny amount I sprayed on her back affected her eggs? She didn't consume it or anything.
