Blue Ameraucana thread!

If an EE had NOT been involved, and this little one came out of good clean lines from a splash roo and a blue wheaten hen... what would this down color be expected to feather out as? Blue? Splash?

Blue and splash should create 50% blue and 50% splash. Blue wheatens Hen and a splash roo should produce either splashes or blue wheatens. You would not get a solid blue chick out of that pairing.

Actually, that's false. A splash roo over blue wheaten hen would create 50% blue and 50% splash offspring. The extended black (EE) gene, even if diluted by two copies of the blue gene (BlBl) would still be dominant over the wheaten (E^whE^wh) genes of the hen. They would be split for wheaten, though. Their genetic makeup would look something like this: EE^wh, with at least one copy of the blue gene, so Blbl or BlBl. Hope that helps. If you want to learn more about genetics, a fun way to learn is to play with the chicken calculator. It can show you how the different genes interact with one another. Here's a link: http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html Have fun!!

You are more of an expert than I, clearly... Thank you. I appreciate it!

I believe you mean "splash wheaten" rather than a "splash" male over blue wheaten hens.

I am so very NOT an expert, lol. I have just been trying to learn as much as possible about Ameraucana genetics in particular since I am breeding them for the first time this year. And I have both bbs and bw/w/sw varieties, so those are the two I know the most about. It just so happened to be a question about the one thing in genetics that I know, hahaha!

I had my first hatch yesterday, from my blue Ameraucana pullet and black Ameraucana roo! She's the prettiest bird in my flock, got my Ameraucanas from Whitmore Farm last summer. My luck, out of 8 straight run chicks I ended up with one pullet! Hoping for better odds on these chicks :) Wondering if the chick in the upper right is black or dark blue?

Looks like extended black.
