I have a question... Why does everyone like orps? Just wondering

They have a lovable, docile attitude; lay a lot of eggs; grow quickly, so culls can be Sunday dinner; aren't aggressive; have huge, huggable fluffybutts; and curious, friendly personalities.

That being said, Buff Orps from the hatchery just look like...a chicken...to me.

thats interesting about the personality- my first chickens were hatchery BO, one as friendly as could be- Sugar, RIP, found her dead in the nestbox- her hatchmate is Spice, the most unfriendly bird! but looking at your pictures, there is a real diff from hatchery quality...

I love them because you get the best of both worlds.. they lay a good sized egg, are good layers, they lay well in hard winters, and don't mind bad weather. You don't have to baby them at all. They are duel purpose and make a beautiful eating bird. They have laods of fat under the skin, more then most birds so it does make it a bit hard to pluck, however that fat means more to freeze and store for cooking needs. They are go broodie, so if your bator goes bad or you just don't want to mess with a bator, you have broodies to raise chicks. They have a wonderful temperament. I have never owned a rooster that was mean in this breed. They are just wonderful to be around. Oh.. and did I mention they are beautiful?

Hmmmm, didn't know there had been any in the states that long.

My birds came from Bama chicken at least 3yrs ago. When I ask her what the history on them was yesterday, she said they would be about 50% English.. yes that through me for a loop.. but..she should know what she had when the eggs were purchased.

I don't believe that Julie's Charlie is even 3 years old yet. I got some of the first hatching eggs she offered and I hatched them in June of 2009. Maybe you got yours from her american flock prior to her importing the UK eggs.

I have been talking to her this morning trying to figure out when the eggs were sent. I was really suprised when yesterday she said they were English.. that was the first I had herd of it. I just thought they were American Orps.. Im still not sure they aren't. It was a freind that bought them from her, then I bought the flock from my freind, so I have had to e-mail my freind and ask her what year she bought the eggs in. I was only able to get eggs last year, so .. how long does it take for a bird to go from hatching to laying? I got eggs the second year they were laying.. that was last year. If you can do the math on that.. thats how old the birds are. I didn't say this to start crap.. but one person has been very diligent on this and has messaged Julie and me quite allot this morning and not very nicely I may add. I think they beleive they have the corner on English? who knows. I don't care one way or the other and I never ment for my statement to start all this about my birds. I simply said it because of the fuss going on at the time and thought the fact they were both would sort of shut up the squabble.. little did I know.. WOW....

anyway.. I don't sell my birds, chicks or eggs, never have. They are for my use only so what ever they are.. they are and I don't really care. Im getting all this straight so that the one person blowing a gasket can relax.

but.. the above on the eggs is the time line.. so.. you all figure it out.

I'm very well aware of the phone calls and the pm's going on this morning....can't say your responses have been real nice either.

No one thinks they have or nor do they want the corner on the market on the UK birds.
