HELLO!! I have picked up a blue Bantam Cochin at a bird auction two weeks ago. She is a cuddle freak! Over past week have noticed feathers on top of head and around eyes diminishing. Past three days she is often alone, does not go to feeder when food is put in ( but Large Wyandotte Rooster won"t let anyone eat until he does). She seems to be making crying noises. I noticed that her left eye is closed shut and seems to be swollen. There is no discharge or crust from eyes or nose. I have quarantined her this am to check her poop. Her crop is soft and she has not laid since I brought her home. She seems to be young. I have not seen her up on the roost in the past 5 days, previously she sat up there with the rooster. Weight is the same. She seems lethargic , but I think she is in pain so is not moving, I did get her to peek her eye open, but it really looks swollen. I have only had chicken for one year and have never had any issues.. your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Welcome to BYC. When bringing new birds into the flock it is best to quarantine them away from the others for 4-6 weeks in case they develop symptoms of infectious disease. She may have been pecked in the eye since the rooster has been rough and, but I would be suspicious that she may have MG or coryza, or another respiratory disease. Those diseases are chronic, and will infect your whole flock, so I would watch her for other symptoms, and put some Neosporin or Terramycin ointment into her eye in case it was pecked. Treating with Tylan50, Gallimycin, or oxytetracycline may help the symptoms of a respiratory disease, but won't cure them. Getting her tested might tell you what she may have. Here is a list of diseases with symptoms for you, and info on contacting your state vet for testing: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

Thanks! I did have her separated for a week. I used some homeopathic remedies for eyes and infections she is opening her eye now and keeping it open.albeit halfway.,and t looks less swollen. I am in Canada,I have not heard of any vets looking at chickens....where would I find Tylan50 and the others you mention? Her poop is normal, but looks broody. No discharge. The swelling is above the eye making it appear more like she was injured by the turkey... Because there is no discharge I am hopeful it is more a bully turkey issue than anything, or am I being unrealistic?
