Blue Copper and Splash Copper Marans Discussion

They are not wheaten. Wheaten have a copper triangle on the wing feathers. I find that blues TEND to just be lighter in color than the blacks not sure why.

You DO NOT WANT COPPER on the breast. It should be blue. some copper is allowed but not preferred.

I hatched some Marans in 2013. I ended up with 4 pullets. They were hatched out of nice dark eggs, but they are laying eggs that are just a shade darker than my Australorps with a different shape.

Is this normal? Is it that hard to get a hen that lays the dark chocolate eggs?

I would really appreciate a critique of Ivan. Poor boy. It was in the 40s and raining her this morning and by the time I went out after lunch it had dropped to the 30s and the wind was blowing hard. He was nice and comfy hanging out in the pop door and I chased him out on the ice to get pictures. He is about a year and a half old. You better believe he scuttled right back in when I stopped blocking the door

Looks like it's been cold and his comb is frostbitten. Ow!

Yes, I have two roosters with frostbite :( It has been as cold as minus 20 here and with wind chill approaching 30 below. I have good solid coops with ventilation, but the weather has been crazy this winter.

Not sure what else I can do for them. I have a lot of chickens, ducks, turkeys, and a couple of geese and only the two big boys are having this problem. First year this has happened.

Some folks were putting vaseline on the combs/wattles during our cold snap. My cockerels came out fine. I just kept checking their combs and they always felt warm. Sorry it happened to your guys.

I was thinking of using bag balm. That way it might help it heal up, too.
Just be really careful not to dislodge the scabs. Maybe warm it up first and more paint it on. I use Dynamite Wound Salve and also their Wound Balm on my birds and also use the DynaPro in the water for all the birds. The Balm would be more protective in your situation. www.dynamitespecialty.com/candijohnson

Yes.... especially when you have to add new blood because you lost BOTH your breeding roos. You will always lose color when you do that. when you breed those birds together you might get better egg color. Of if you breed them to other birds you may or may not see a change in color..... just the luck of the draw.
