Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

So after what seems like a whole life time, i finally got my babies all grown up......... here are a couple pictures of them, what do you guys think? I got rid of my Splash roo, and Blue roo and kept my Black roo.

I know red looks pretty orange in these photos, and when i can say i am very sure they could still use a lot of work including the red color, they are infact redder then this picture looks. Can anyone let me know now that they are laying and Bad Johnny is doing his thing what i should be looking for?

Thanks. Melissa~

So yesterday, I picked up my first flock of Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. I know that they are going to need some work, but I was hoping if someone could help me figure out what I need to do with them to enhance their colors.

I was so excited that I was able to get all 9 birds, 5 hens and 4 roosters. They are about 1 year old.

Thoughts?

to both of you i would say pick the darkest red and use them for breeding. orange is NOT a desirable color to work with. that being said, splash will dilute the red some, but should still appear red, not gold or orangey.

and to sgoldinger, someone said they thought they were all splash, but the roo in the top left of the first pic looks blue to me, as do a couple of the darker girls... so i would definitely use them in the hopes of getting a black laced nice DARK red roo. (when bred to splash will produce all blue laced)

Yea, I said that there looked to be a darker roo in the back, and I do see a blue in the first pic.

Hi Everyone, thought I'd share photos of my BLRW trio here.
I recently acquired these and have been trying to obtain as much information as possible on them. I understand that all three are splashes which I am happy about but there have been a few concerns regarding them.
One concern is the bit of black feathering on the rooster's head and tail.
The other 2 concerns are the body shape of them (keep in mind that in these photos they are very alert and appear more upright) and their leg color. The leg color of all 3 is pretty much the same with the male being a slight shade off. Photos are attached of everything.
Enjoy and please offer any info on them!
They are gorgeous birds.

I have been getting eggs from them but none are fertile as of yet...I think.

the hens are both nice and dark red, but the rooster is more gold than red. as for type i am not a good one to judge yet, but breeding for blrw, using that rooster you will get a lot of chicks that are NOT red, but gold... so if keeping chicks for breeding, get rid of anyone even remotely orange or gold tinted, keeping only the deepest mahogany reds. if you can find a nice black laced red rooster, i would recommend him over the one you have now. all your chicks will be blue laced reds from such a pairing.

as for the black splotches on him, that's normal for a splash. they're pale silvery grey with 'splashes' of black/blue here and there...

Do you find your wyandottes to be skittish? We have a 12 week old hatch and have one pullet - compared to my maran and EEs, the Wyandotte is very nervous. It's hard to coax her from the coop and she runs back in at any noise

I have a SLW roo that I hatched, he is 10 weeks old. He is scared of anything new at first. He has been raised with lots of attention, so he is not afraid of me, but he is afraid of anything he hasn't seen before. When I moved him to the coop and he had a nice area with shavings he stood in the dirt afraid of it, if I feed him lettuce he is afraid of it...etc. He is really little compared to any other Wyandottes I have raised, but he is HEAVY when I pick him up! I carry him around everyday when I am in his yard.

To make sure that I understand, which I am sorry, but I am new to the breeding of wyandottes, but if I take and isolate the rooster that is definitely BLRW and not the splash and the 2 or three hens, I have the potential of throwing the Black Laced Red that I need to darken the line? I also have another BLRW chick that is about 3 months old that I have from another line. I still can't determine what the coloring is going to be like, but it is much darker than the ones that I just got.

What other colors of chicks with the crossing of them throw? Additional splash? The person that I got them from thought she had gotten show quality eggs when she hatched, which after I saw them, I knew that they were not dark enough, but honestly I paid $90 for all 9 hens and roosters which was a phenomenal deal even if it is going to take some work. I want to make sure that I am doing it right so any and all help is greatly appreciated. Additionally, I would be willing to buy additional eggs to bring the right color into my line. I just need to know what to work with.

Is this the color that I should initial target with the below set? (Sorry couldn't figure out how to rotate the picture)

In this one the top hen, not the bottom. She is a splash correct?

Just about every single breed I've ever raised and owned was skittish including my BLRWs. All of my Cuckoo marans, Rhode Island Reds, White and Buff orpingtons, Comets, Red Stars, Light Brahmas, Old English games, Millies, Leghorns, etc....have done nothing more than run over to me for food. Still I love them of course. I have 1 buff orpington that occasionally lets me pick her up but the rest of the time she runs from me. Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong. I've raised them all from chicks. I love reading stories of how friendly and even affectionate some chickens are, wish I had that here!!
The only bird I can walk over to and pet just about any time is my Royal Palm tom.
Besides the over all look and color of Wyandottes, it was what I read about their calm and friendly disposition that prompted me to buy them. But mine are not fans of me that's for sure!

It depends on the birds personalities too. I had a PR or RIR or NH... can't remember now. that would jump on my shoulder and stay there till I got her off..... My leghorns (some) will stay near me and let me pet them too and my Ameraucanas too. My dottes don't run when I go in the pens. They stay where they are at and watch everything I do. I could probably touch them but I don't try to when I am feeding, usually I am in a hurry.

Quote: bottom is a splash, top is a blue... and personally, i would take the blues, put with the blue roo, and then select the chicks for those darkest red who have the best body type and go with them. typically the red will be lighter in a splash than a blue, but black laced would show the truest darkest reds.
