Just thought I'd share these photo. My BLRW sure has a lot of personality.

I am looking for some examples of the PERFECT BLRW comb both for a hen and a roo. Can someone post pics please. I can only find drawings from the side but I would like to see what is desired. I know there is the spike, inverted spike, bumps, etc. But I would like a photo of the perfect specimen

You don't need to see just BLRW combs. Any Wyandotte color variety will have the same standard. I have several photos of my own birds, both good and so-so combs. The Wyandotte club has good drawings, that actually give you a pretty good representation of comb structure. It does show front and sides. Another site to see many, many Wyandotte photos is the ABA website. They have a photo section that has tons of photos of Wyandottes (under rosecomb clean-legged)..
The main thing to remember, is that the comb should follow the contour of the head. It starts in the front and is "ideally" supposed to be square across the front and taper to the spike. As long as you have a spike, it can be relatively short (one breeder told me that as long as you can put a sheet of paper underneath it and still see a spike, that is acceptable), so long as it follows the contour. Complete absence of a spike or a "dimple" where the spike should be, is not desireable. Neither is a really long one. You want one to have the little bumps in the comb. Some will resemble a tire tread and others will simply be a few braille dots! The round head, short curved beak and deep body of the bird are all very important for the character of the true Wyandotte type.
Try and read the standard on the Wyandotte site. It has drawings to accompany the description of the breed that really help.

This is a white male that I used to own. He has a "putty comb" and it is too large in the front. It is however generally square and follows the contour of the head nicely. It might be a touch long in the spike. He has a great short beak and decent head.


Here are three current black males of mine. Two that have correct combs, but each are slightly different. The third bird has a "raised" comb. Not perfect and not as desireable, but he has other qualities that make him worth using on some females. He also has a leader.

I thought I'd share some of my BLRW.

I hatched a batch of five chicks three months ago. Sadly (for me), four turned out to be cockerels. The pullet seems to be a splash. I'm trying to rehome all the boys. Here's the two I still need to find homes for.


Then, I got seven hatching eggs from Corvidae. All seven hatched! They will be two weeks old this week.


I can see a couple blacks in there (I think?). I'm hoping for at least one BLUE pullet from this group.

Can anyone confirm for me I have four splash and two blues or perhaps one blue (front) and possibly a black? That is my Austrolorp playing foster mom. She's been fabulous and SO lucky she went broody three days before chicks were picked up!!

They are sitting till tomorrow.... Can't wait to see what these are going to look like! I am going to sit back and read about them for the next 21 days so I am an expert LOL

The darker one in the middle looks a lot like my black ones did at that age, even though I thought they were blue. Cute chicks!
