He is really brassy in the hackle areas, which is really hard to get rid of. He is beautiful all the same, I would keep him if he were mine, but wouldn't use him for breeding. The color they are shooting for is a deep red mahagony. That's just my opinion also, just being honest. ; ). I'm sure others feel different. So I'd love an opinion.... I got this roo for my backyard flock. I don't have any BLR hens for him I just got him bc I loved his coloring. I recently placed an ad trying to sell (or trade) my two lf cochin hens. I have a Speckled Sussex hen and I'd like to get another hen and a roo so I could breed them. I had a lady respond to my ad and during our talk she found out I had this roo. She was interested even though I had no intention on selling him and so I sent her the two photos below. She wants him, like bad. She offered me a trio of Speckled Sussexs for him. I turned her down but said if I changed my mind I'd let her know. I don't have cash right now (which is why I was trying to trade my lf cochins for a pair of SS) but I really didn't want to sell my roo bc we just love how pretty he is. I'm crazy, right? I'd love your opinions on my roo. Did I luck up and get a good quality one?![]()

How do you correct a biter?I would not allow your cockerel to bite you. You might think it's funny but that is not something you want to encourage and it can lead to much worse behavior. He should have a healthy respect for you and other people. He sees you as lower than him in the peeking order. He will eventually see you as a threat to his girls and will attack you and other people.

I'll check out the threads, thanks! How do you correct a biter?
Well sometimes aggressive roos can't be rehabilitated. There are already lots of threads on the subject so I suugest you search BYC so you can read what more experienced people have written. My first roo is 18 weeks and so far is good so I haven't had to do anything with him. However, my BLRW hen was a biter/picker. Whenever she picked at me I would poke her head with my finger. Not really hard but something like another chicken would do to her. She hasn't tried to pick at me recently so seems to have learned her lesson. I honestly don't know if that is something you want to try with a roo.
A few things I remember reading that have worked for some folks (but not for others):
Walk through the rooster. Don't walk around him. Make him get out of your way.
Pick them up and carry them around like a football.
Don't let them jump on you and make them move away if they are too close.
Chase them around the yard to show you are boss.
I'll check out the threads, thanks!
Well excuse me. I have no problem with using the words cock or cockerel. It's just lots of times I type on my phone and it's faster to put roo. For the record I raise quail for meat so have no issues with discussing breeding, culling, butchering, or whatever. It's one thing to disagree but something entirely different to dismiss others outright because you 'think' they don't know what they're taking about. If I gave misinformation, then please correct me but don't flat out say I have no grasp of the topic.aaaahhhhh.....When someone uses the awful word 'roo' instead of cock or cockerel, I don't feel inclined to believe they have a grasp of the situation under discussion. I can even tolerate rooster if the writer is so afraid of offending the readers but this is, after all, a chicken forum that deals seriously with all aspects of breeding, culling showing and just about every other interest in chickens....It's time people "Call a Spade a Spade"!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE.
