Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Oh thank Heavens!!! I was getting very worried based on some other info I got!!!!

Anybody have a general cut off for wattle growth or comb color indicating roos? As in at week X , if the comb is pale and no obvious wattles the bird should be a pullet.
I can tell my males by 3-4 weeks old because they will start having wattles develop. I also noticed that females have narrower combs compared to the males as chicks. I look at the combs really close and see if there is any growth going on or if it is still smooth. Thick legs is usually a good indicator, but my SLW females have thick legs, much thicker than my BLRW females. Also the males in my birds feather in way slower.

OK, I got 5 blrw chicks from a breeder, I told her to pick a couple she thought would be roosters, (because I need to replenish my meat and egg supply don't I?), and she said something about the feathers too, but I think now after research she was backwards. She said the ones with longer tail feathers usually are males, and the shorter feathers Females.

It has been my experience that the females usually get tail feathers first.

You have some BEUUTIFUL birds!!! Here are my 3 littles. They are supposed to be Blue laced wyandottes but I'm wondering if the darkest one could be a gold laced? Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm also thinking one may be a tiny roo :<

the one on the left of the last 2 pics is definitely a red i'd say... the other doesn't look quite as pale as a gold tho.
but that may be different than the naked eye. the true mahogany red doesn't usually start coming in until the 2nd or 3rd set of feathers, possibly later if it's a roo.

BLRWs come in blue, black and splash. I would say your dark little one would be the black variety, looks too red to be a gold laced. :) Cute chicks

Thanks for the info! I'm going to have to research this a little more : / I knew about the splash variety but not the black. So would it be called a black laced red ? The red on that darker one is a mahogany color. I was really hoping for a splash but it doesn't look like I got one :< I know they change alot as they grow out so I suppose I will have to wait and see :)

Ok! Thanks so much! Both of the chicks have zero comb growth and no wattles I can see. Yah for maybe pullets!

Now, two of my GLW are already turning pink in the comb and wattles. I wonder if its a pretty good bet that the remaining one who isn't is a pullet.

When does this breed usually start to lay? I have a couple of pet quality that are 16 weeks and was just wondering.
