Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Any ideas on transitioning my 5 week old chicks out of the brooder (in the bathroom) to the coop. I'm not going to do it this week it will be to cold (predicted -20ish overnight). I've been turning the brooder lamp off during the day and leaving the bathroom unheated as much as I can. I would leave the lamp off 24hrs a day but my husband can't pee in the dark and I don't want him turning the light on in the middle of the night and startling them.

Gosh! I hope the coop is really well insulated!!
and they may need the lamp on 24/7 in the coop to keep it from freezing.

In san Diego 6 week old chicks still have access to heat 24/7 and they are in the garage. They may not need it but they seem to grow much faster and thrive when it is on.

Very well sealed, not insulated yet. Fortunately it's not -20 often. Thank you! I'm going to keep the heat lamp with them when I transition them over. I may add a second one so there is plenty of space for them to keep warm.

Quote: If they are fully feathered...I would turn off the heat in the bathroom. I would take them out in the yard a few times a day first. You need to start building up resistance..not only from the cold..but bacterias. Baby chicks are taken outside in all weather by a hen when they are days old. You need to be the hen and get them out and start building those immunities. When they can stay outside for over an hour with out constantly crying and they actually start to look for food, they should be good to go. A set time never works since all chickens are different. It might be another month yet.

Hi everybody! I'm not new to chickens but new to BLRW. I hatched these little guys 3 weeks ago. Today they are out for the second day in a row enjoying 82 degrees. I bought these eggs as BLRW but to my untrained eye the parents look splash which is what I'm really hoping for. What do you guys think? Probably still too early to sex them but any guesses?

Definitely look splash colored too me, thanks for posting!

I hatched BLRW's 3 weeks ago on Thursday, I think I have blue and black laced reds. Cool to compare ours at the same age:

Thank you very much! They are fully feathered so I'm leaving the hat lamp off full time and keeping the bathroom door shut so it will be nice and cold in there (not looking forward to showering in the morning). I'll start getting them outside next week.
