these are my GUESSES..........

chick 1 - I am 50/50 on this one... there is some redness that might indicate cockerel, but the black skin color of the comb has always turned into a pullet for me

chick 2 - pullet

chick 3 - cockerel

chick 4 - pullet

chick 5 - pullet

2 and 3 are splash, the rest look blue but I can't see their body feathering so hard to tell if they're black or blue. #4 might be black? can't see

its easier to tell by about 8 weeks... how old are they now?

These are only a few weeks old, some a few days apart. Im not at home right now to check but the oldest ones aren't quite a month yet.

Here's some better body views of the chicks and also the chicks hatched yesterday.


Their patterns are so weird to me that they end up looking so different when they mature. Last year when I was hatching them I was so ignorant to the breed I kept selling all the chicks that looked like this as I had thought they first feathered laced. How dumb I was, all those chicks practically given away.


BLRW on left and BLRWxAmericauna on right. They look so simlar, good thing I'm always home when they hatch and band them as soon as one hatched to keep them straight.

these photos are a little dark, I can't tell black from blue very well.... sorry .. what line are they from? you are right about the feathering coming in strange, it's almost barred at first. they look a lot more laced by 8 weeks ish.

in my line (chickenhill's line) the stripe on the back is an indicator of blue or black - black stripe = black, red stripe = blue. you can tell this from day 1.

but I have also hatched multiple other BLRW lines and this isnt always the case. sometimes you can go from their butt fluff color, especially on the 3-4 week olds, and around their legs too.

best I can say, mark the chicks and take notes about their down fluff color and their back stripe color, compare notes when they're older. that way you can learn for your line specifically.

sometimes the blue looks "really dark, almost black?" when you don't have a Black to compare against. the Black comes out very very dark, shiny, with tinges of green in it. can't mistake it.

I have a question about my splash chicks. They all have a really nice blue color. Is this going to turn white as they get older? I really hope not. I'll try and get some pictures this evening when my husband gets back with the camera if I can for better reference.

I have one little pullet but she has a single comb ... how hard is it to breed the single comb out I really like her lacing

Male? Almost 4 wk old BLRW and first and only with pink comb....went pink several days ago. Largest in group as well....
