Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Yep! she eats and drinks fine, i didn't notice right away, she was a few weeks old before it was obvious. I was curious because I will re home her so i don't hatch any of her eggs. I hatch for my own flock, just to replace older hens, and for meat, but i didn't want the chance of grabbing her eggs and having a worse deformation.

So i have a special bird, is this genetic of a malformation from the egg?
She eats and drinks normal, and has grown just as big as the rest of her hatch mates.... she's about 6 weeks old now.

I also have a girl like yours and 1 chick that is crossed beaked. They were purchased and I didn't notice it right away. They eat & drink fine. The little cross beak gets her beak trimmed with cat toenail cutters. I keep upper and lower as short as possible. They are destined for my layer flock. Pretty girl, mine are a blue & a splash.

I have one little silkie that is ever so mildly off to one side. As they get older it usually becomes more pronounced and trimming becomes part of the maintainance of the bird.
This bird is from my line and it is the first I have ever had so I put it down to just one of those things that pops up every now and then. He will not be used to breed. This article is very educational and touches on all of the things that you may need to deal with in the future.

Excellent article...............................thank you

Finally got some BLRW chicks!!! Or so I think... Can anyone help me out?

We were waiting on some chicks to be hatched from a local breeder, but my husband is impatient and found someone about an hour 1/2 away had some chicks ready to go. Needless to say we got between a "breeder war" because the two guys were in the same poultry group on facebook. The guy we were originally supposed to buy from thinks the chicks aren't what the other guy says they are. I am pretty confident the guy is legit... He runs different poultry pages and swaps in the area, and many people have bought chicks from him that we can see. I imagine if they aren't what he says, someone would have mentioned so by now. Now the original guy (we were waiting on eggs to hatch) is saying that the other guy (guy we bought the chicks from) is lying about the specific breeding line they came from because some of our chicks look like they have a single comb. Can a single comb come out on show breeder lines? It really isn't much of an issue for us, since we just want them for backyard egg layers. However, we do think we have one rooster. Just looking for some more info so I can hopefully put this feud to rest.

Here are the chicks:

Yes you can get straight combs from any line. BUT I would not sell them as wyandottes just for a laying flock. Heck any DQ can show in any line. I straight combs and feathered legs every once in a blue moon. My birds cam direct from a big name breeder too.

The second chick looks like a BLRW. I am suspicious about the first one though and it's not just the comb. I've never had a BLRW chick that had head markings like that. Of course, different lines could be different... but i'm not convinced the first one is a wyandotte. Mine look like the bottom one with the black ones being darker and the splash ones being lighter.

x2 the first chick looks like a welsummer or maybe a welsummer X wyandotte. the head markings and color are off, and she has white chipmunk stripes on the back. yes single combs can pop up, but that really doesn't look like a BLRW I have seen (1st pic). the 2nd pic is a splash BLRW

here are some BLRW chicks 4 wks old, all Blues. you can see their head markings in this pic

they feather in with this pattern first, then lacing comes in around 8wks
