Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Pics
I have 2 BLRW roosters and I would like to get it down to one. I bought these from PeakyBeaky back in December. The black one is about 11 months old and the blue is 10 months. Please give me your opinions, good and bad, in regards to type, coloring, etc.. I only got one good picture of the blue because he never stands still for me.

If I had to pick one I would choose the black lace Blue, I like the way he looks better...I am no expert though.

I am thinking of getting a new rooster to add to my pen until I can get one from Foley in late fall. Please help critique this boy as he needs a new home and he may work.

  1. Would you consider his comb to be con caved?
  2. Would you consider his legs too pale?
  3. Is his back too long?
  4. How is his tail carriage?
  5. How are his wattles?
  6. Is the color on his neck and hackles correct?

That roo is NOT a breeder. Why are you adding a new roo? Can you not wait till you get a breeder from Foley?

I don't like either, sorry to say. The black is way off on color-don't know what happened there since he was a first generation Foley bird. His type is better, but he way brassy. I like the color of the BLR better, but he doesn't have the shape of the other. Depending on what hens you have, I'd be leaning to the blue-even with the bad type. Blue to blue gives you the best blue color from what Foley told us. And with another month under him, the Blue may be a better pick.

Don't use the one with all the brassyness. That will only hurt your breeding. I can't really tell on type on the other roo..... but his color is better. He is not as beefy as the other roo. They type is better on the brassy roo, but I would still not use him.

I don't know if I shared what Foley told me or not. I am going to share what I know. I am not a long time breeder so if anyone has anything else to add please do. He told me lots of thing, most I can't remember. But if you have a question, I might remember some nugget of info he gave me.

First, to keep the shafting down you have to use the DARKEST Red birds you have. The darker the red the less shafting. If you use birds with any GOLD, BRASSYNESS.... you will only cause more feather shafting down the road.

You always have to breed for type, but I don't think you should be breeding for type with a bird that will ultimately bring you birds down. As with any breed you have to cull hard to improve your flock. I know sometime it is hard. For example.... you got hatching eggs from So and So and they had Foley birds. But you chicks are not really up to snuff. The reason is because the breeder with Foley birds bought chicks from him and didn't cull, neither did Foley.... they were Foley birds and they wanted to keep them all. Even Foley culls his birds and OFTEN. When you buy birds from a breeder, you are getting culls... think about it, they are not going to sell their best birds, especially if they have been grown out some. They picked the best birds and sold the rest.

What I am trying to say is we need to CULL and CULL hard to improve this color. It may take years to get to where Name Brand breeders are, but we are not going to get their breeding mediocre birds. Breeders only breed with about 10% of what they hatch and I would really thing that is a high number. (so if you hatch 10 chicks only 1 will be a breeder) You need to make sure you are using the BEST roo you can find too. They are passing their genes off to 100% of the chicks. I think good hens with GREAT roos will get you further than an OK roo and great hens. Only breed your BEST and you will move forward. If we do that the chicks will improve every year and you will see HUGE progress in a short period of time.

One more thing, breeding brother and sister will exaggerate the problems. You need to use closely related birds but not brother and sister. I know there are times when you think you need to but make sure your birds are really good birds, because the flaws will get bigger and more pronounced in the chicks and you have gotten no where. As a breeder I try to always have more than one line of birds. I like to have two lines to breed and I try to always include eggs from each pen.

I want to clarify too, this is not directed at anyone and is just some general breeding info we can all use

If anyone else has some words of wisdom, please share. These are BEAUTIFUL birds and any breeding wisdom can only help everyone on this thread that wants to learn.

I am rambling now..... I hate to read long posts......

I want to share pics of the Roos I got from Foley. I am not bragging as I had NOTHING to do with breeding these birds. This is just to give an example of what we are breeding to.

First this was his MAIN breeding roo. This roo got him his first real start in BLRW.

In this pic you can see how WIDE he is. He is the same front to back.

Can you see how dark his hackles are and see how dark the hens are too.... they were in his breeding pen too.

Maybe a better pic for his color.

Another pic from the top.

This is what bay eyes look like on a show winning roo

This little roo, I was not supposed to come home with. He was a high dollar roo, but he had to be a sub for the roo I there to get. He had a broken beak and he volunteered to get me another roo for the same price..... It was my lucky day.

This guy does not pose like the other roo.... had not been shown yet and was camera shy LOL I don't have many good pics, he has filled out a lot since I took these pics.

This guy is DARK I mean so dark he really had to convince me he was really blue.

He has NO feather shafting, NONE! That is because he is so dark of a red it hides the shaft.

He really is starting to look like a Wyandotte now. His pic he looks really long and he was, but not now.

I didn't ask but I am sure that roo above is his father. He only had one pen of BLRW and 2 roos. The alternate roo was penned up and the main roo ran with the girls.

You can also see how dark that splash is. She is very dark for a splash. They are just lighter red for some reason.

I am posting these so you can see what SQ birds look like. I had NOTHING to do with the quality of these birds. But I have learned one BIG lesson since I have had birds, get the BEST you can... they are worth it. They will still need work, but you sure don't have as much to do

But you do have to cull hard they are not perfect.

I was hoping the black was better because he is very protective of the flock and is much easier to handle. The blue is very skittish. I have the 2 splash and 1 blue hen that came with them. I also have 8 young BLRW coming up, 6 of them being offspring of these guys, but none are blue. I think 4 are pullets and I lost one splash cockerel to an unknown predator today.
