Blue or black maran?

I have this young cockerel BBS Maran. He is about 7 weeks old. At first I was pretty certain he was going to be black but as he grows he still has some grey feathering. Is this little guy blue or black? He hatched with both blue and splash marans from the same trio but I’m not sure what color his mom and dad were.

Looks a bit more blue to me, but I could be wrong.

Looks like a very dark, smoky blue to me. He's gorgeous!!

I wish I understood how to differentiate the two! I just wanted to comment and saw how cute your little cockerel is !! <3

Black is black with no dilution of color. Blue is diluted black. The standard for Blue calls for slate blue color. The dark blue if of breeder quality would want to be bred to a splash. It will lighten the blue in offspring.
