Hello BYC Fam! :woot:frow

Anyone have pics of their Blue or Splash jersey giant roosters? I have a pair I got from the hatchery. They are supposed to both be blue, but I am thinking my male must be splash, because he is a much lighter blue color than the female (who is a very dark, almost black "blue"). I did some research because I was confused by the extreme color difference. I've only ever had black JG's, but the girl looked almost totally black to me. Now that ive seen some more pictures of "blue" JG's, I'm thinking that the blue is kind of a dark blue, I guess.:idunno Ill try to get pictures of the pair later on today for reference. I was reading a bit on color genetics and saw that two blues bred together have a chance at producing some splash colors, and I'm just now wondering if thats what I got.

Cheers!
M

heres why im trying to get pics of other peoples Blue JG roos. Idk if the color standard is super off here, but this is a pic of a blue JG roo from a reputable breeder. This is more the dark blue color of my female, and my male is so much lighter, he looks more like the splash colored roos ive seen. I understand that he appears to be a traditional "blue" color, as far as chickens go. But i was referring to JG, specifically. This is what is causing the confusion here.

i dont think my female is black. shes dark, yes. But shes not as black as the JG's ive had in the past, and her feathers have no iridescence

The blue color varies quite a bit until a breeder narrows it down within their flock.

Your cockerel is a lighter blue but then your pullet is dark blue. The result of those two will be blue ranging from each parent with the majority of offspring being in the middle. Of course a mating of blue on blue results in 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash offspring.

Once you narrow the flock to the desired hue of blue it will start to fade over generations. Mating to a black bird will darken the blue in offspring. It's a juggling act to maintain the pigeon blue the standard calls for.

Note the lacing on the bird you posted from a breeder source. That too is something you need to track in breedings. Complete lacing is the goal.
